Children under 3 have barely any impulse control, they are just driven by instinct. This can be really helpful in shedding some of the strange messaging we may have heard or internalised about children and babies. Impulse control gradually grows until somewhere in our mid to late 20s and then we still have to know when and how to employ it.

It's much easier to center connection when we don't have a story running in our head about where the behavior is coming from. Off-track behavior is our child's way of saying "I need help", "I need closeness", "I need connection".

When we can meet the behavior with warmth and empathy, we can help them kick off the healing process.
