NGĀ KAPA HAKA KURA TUARUA O AOTEAROA 2020

Tuarua, e whai whakaaro ana ki a rātau kua whetūrangitia i ngā rangi, i ngā marama, i ngā tau kua huri.

E kī ana te kōrero, he aha te mea nui o tēnei ao, he tangata, he tangata, he tangata!

Tina! Haumi e, Hui e, Tāiki e!

The National Committee, with the support of Ngāti Whātua ki Ōrākei and the Host Committee – Te Ohu ā Tinirau, have decided to CANCEL Ngā Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua o Aotearoa 2020.

We have taken all factors into consideration including:

- Health authorities forecasting that the effects of Covid-19 could be peaking in Auckland in June & July
- Cognisant of how the 1918 Influenza devastatingly affected our people
- The current directive from the Government is that all gatherings of 500 or more people within the next month must be cancelled. This decision will be reviewed by the end of March and there is a possibility of it being extended or following the decision by other countries to reduce gatherings to less than 10 people.
- We would rather overreact now not knowing what the outcome will be than underreact and know that the outcome of our decision contributed to illness or worse.
- Our kaumātua and kuia are some of the most vulnerable and there will be no deterring them from coming to watch their mokopuna perform if this event proceeds.
- We hope that in making this early decision will allow schools and their communities to:
▪ Get refunds on accommodation and travel etc
▪ Stop the need for live-ins and practicing in close proximity to several others
▪ Allow whānau to focus on their own health and wellbeing

The National Committee, Ngāti Whātua ki Ōrākei and the Host Committee - Te Ohu ā Tinirau would now like to invite everyone back to the Spark Arena from the 4th – 8th July 2022. We would also like to thank Te Tau Ihu o te Waka ā Māui and Mātaatua for graciously allowing Tāmaki Makaurau to alter the hosting order.

We would also thank all judges, sponsors and funding agencies for their support and we hope this can continue into 2022.

A range of possible alternatives have been investigated but it was unanimously decided that a full and early cancellation provided the best long term outcome for our people.

The next steps are:
- The National Committee will reimburse schools their registration fee
- We will need to hold regional competitions in 2021 to determine who will qualify for the 2022 nationals.

In closing, we would like to sincerely thank the 42 Kapa who qualified as the best in their respective regions. Your names will be included in the Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua Society Incorporated archives as qualifying for Ngā Kapa Haka Kura Tuarua o Aotearoa 2020.
