Pathways to success ↗️

Cadie was once a high school student unsure of what's next for her. She learned about MIT Trades Academy and gave automotive a try - she hasn't looked back since. Thanks to that decision, she's made full use of her passion for hands-on learning as she continued her pathway to full-time learning. Cadie is now making waves as a certified mechanic for a world-renowned luxury vehicle company.

2026 Fulbright scholarship recipient is...

Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) nursing graduate Ebony Komene has received a 2026 Fulbright–Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga Graduate Award.

The prestigious scholarship will allow her to study Indigenous nursing at Washington State University and Indigenous nurse practitioner models at University of Hawaiʻi next year.

A fruitful partnership 🤝

A research partnership between School of Social Work, Ōtara and Oranga Tamariki is helping strengthen after-hours youth justice practice, providing evidence that is informing services supporting rangatahi across Aotearoa New Zealand.

The research examined Oranga Tamariki’s After-hours Youth Justice Pilot, known operationally as the Rapid Response Team, which provides specialist youth justice support outside normal business hours. The project was undertaken after the ministry approached the School of Social Work to independently review the pilot and identify opportunities for improvement.

The partnership grew from the longstanding relationship between the school and the Oranga Tamariki Ōtara site, where social work students undertake placements and graduates have moved into employment.

From Ōtara campus to Michelin-approved restaurant 🤯

For alumnus Mike Cook, studying hospitality at Manukau Institute of Technology was the first step towards a career that has taken him around the world.

Today, he is Head Chef at The Bakehouse at Ayrburn in Arrowtown after serving as Senior Sous Chef and Acting Head Chef at The Woolshed, one of two restaurants within the Ayrburn Precinct recognised in this year’s Michelin Guide New Zealand.

The restaurant’s inclusion in the guide is one of the latest milestones in a career that has taken Mr Cook from East Auckland to the kitchens of the United Kingdom and back to working in one of New Zealand’s hottest hospitality destinations.
