The Story House

The Story House The ‘Story House’ is multi platform storytelling and story making programme. A story is told as a series of illustrations are revealed supporting the narrative.

It draws its inspiration from the tradition of illustrated storytelling, in particular from Japanese Kamishibai. The illustrations are held in a house, whose opening doors reveal the pictures. The ‘house’ operates as both an intriguing framing device and metaphor for the dwelling each human being operates as, as a ‘home for story’. The ‘Story House’ aims to actively engage audiences in the process

of storytelling and story making. Stories performed and illustrated by adults, are created as art pieces to inspire children’s own story creations with the view that adult and child story art sit along side one another, equals in the story continuim.

Last Batt on the Mat for 2023 and we'll be exploring using puppets with young children.
I love puppets but am by no means a puppeteer but rather someone who has learn to use puppets over my 30 plus years of working with young children. Puppets can be great allies, storytellers and problem solvers. If you'd like to learn how you can make friends with puppets then join us on the 19th December 7.30pm (NZ time). If you're not a member of Batt on the Mat you can sign up here https://imagined-worlds.net/batt-on-the-mat. It's only $10 month. Not only will you learn about puppets but you'll get access to a library of teaching resources in the areas of dance, drama and storytelling.

It's lovely when the work you share in the world comes back to visit you in a new and wonderful guise - this 'wonder house' (created by children at a school holiday programme run by the Central Otago Library Service) was inspired by my ' Story House' which was in turn inspired by the traditional Japanese storytelling art of kamishibai...the wheel of creativity never tires :-)
