Huge congratulations to our talented students - Rundell Pelayo, Alex Lin, Frence Sincero, Matthew Murphy, and Jake Crossan, who represented our school in the 2026 University of Canterbury Engineering Challenge, hosted in partnership with UC TronSoc!

This interdisciplinary competition asked high school teams to dive into real-world problem-solving by designing an engineering solution to assist dementia (mate wareware) patients and their caregivers with daily routines, safety, and independence.

Our students powered through an intense 8-hour day of research, brainstorming, and technical design. Their creative solutions included "SimpleTask" - a tablet and smart-object reminder system to help early, stage dementia patients maintain independence at home, as well as specialized assistive watches!

Here is what a few of our participants had to say about their experience:

"Today, my friends and I attempted the UC engineering challenge... Ultimately, this project went beyond what I was expecting, rather than just an engineering task, it gave me a sense of empathy and determination to create meaningful solutions that genuinely help the daily lives of others." — Rundell Pelayo

"I thought the UC engineering challenge was an excellent opportunity to experience how engineers combat daily problems that engineers face in the real world... Overall it was an awesome day and I had a lot of fun designing our solution." — Jake Crossan

At Monday’s assembly, we celebrated a number of outstanding recent achievements across a range of sports and academic activities.

Congratulations to our students on their success at the Timaru Boys’ Interschool, Aoraki Badminton, Aoraki Trapshooting, and Otago Secondary Schools Basketball, where our Junior team finished 2nd and our Senior team 3rd. A special congratulations to Boston Cathcart, who was selected for the Otago All-Star 5.

We also recognised Oskar Obrienesse-Little for receiving a Bronze Certificate in the New Zealand Geography Olympiad 2026, along with achievements in Chess, Rugby and the He Ara Tika Awards.

Well done to all our students for their hard work, commitment and achievements. We are very proud of your success.

Last Friday, Ms Dalziel took 8 students to Waitaki Girls' High School to participate in the North Otago Model UN. Students enjoyed time learning and thinking about geopolitical issues as well as working as a team
