Mālō e lelei, last week we proudly celebrated Tongan Language week. Our Tongan akonga were so empowered to share, teach and show off their rich and beautiful culture by singing, dancing, showing off their special clothing, sharing karakia and teaching us different Tongan words. A huge Mālō to Waitaki Girls High School Pasifika Girls for coming in to visit and sharing such a moving performance. Our tamariki were beyond excited to have their big friends, sisters, mums and cousins visit. Susana and Jess – we kā mihi for supporting this to happen. What a beautiful way to recognise and celebrate this important culture in our kindergarten community.

It's been three weeks since we moved back "home" to 13 Gifford Street and life has been rocking along at Maheno Kindergarten.
Tamariki have settled in as if they were never away. Kaiako, still unpacking boxes, moving things, finding things and, this Saturday, filling the sand pit. We tried to think of a funny answer to "How many kaiako does it take to fill a sand pit with sand"...but, nothing came to mind at the time 😎 A giant heart of gratitude to Tom and the Hunt whānau, and the Botha whānau for spotting some hot and "not very strong superhero" kaiako and mucking in. We absolutely could not have finished that mahi without you!

And, a big THANK YOU to Roadmetals who donated and transported the sand.

Since we have moved back, we have been visited by Constable Morriss who talked to us about road safety, and the Maheno school children who came over for "buddy reading" on Friday.

We have also celebrated book week, (we love all things "bookish" at Maheno), with some fabulous guest story readers including our own GM Julie. Honourable mention to Skye for embracing the dress up! Of course, book week must end with dress up day, and there were some wonderful characters at kindergarten that day. Luckily, we had Batman, a kaiako superhero, and the good fairy to help with the day😀

We are all so happy to be here in our wonderful new space back at our original site. We are looking forward to many, many more years to come....and looking towards celebrating the 150th Birthday of Ōamaru Kindergarten Association!
