Villa Sophia

Villa Sophia Inspirational and educational learning opportunities for children, parents and teachers. Villa Sophia is located right in the heart of Ōākura, our community.

With the beginning of a brand new year, we have a brand new name reflecting new directions. this is the place where our beautiful 100-year-old villa stands, covered in wisteria and surrounded by a children's garden. Villa Sophia is grounded in a sense of place, something at the heart of all we do. After a year of pause and reflection, (much needed after 17 years of being open as an Early Childhood

Centre)we have re-imagined our purpose and will be offering educational and inspirational learning opportunities for children, parents, and teachers in 2023. We will keep you posted!

Please add to this, no internet search or screen photos of trees can replace being under them and spending time with them. Maria Montessori came from a time of no such instant pulling up of an image of a tree or all the information (with AI some of it will be incorrect) about trees, their inter connectedness and the life they support all around them.

Through working with UKU, you’ll experience its calming, creative benefits while discovering how powerful it can be for the young children's LEARNING.

IN THIS WORKSHOP you’ll CREATE your own large decorative UKU KĀKANO / CLAY BEAD, AND a SMALL FIGURINE, which will be fired and returned to you and your Centre or Home as a beautiful keepsake of the experience.

This is for TEACHERS, CAREGIVERS and HOME EDUCATORS to have the opportunity to get hands on with UKU, get inspired, get to know this incredible natural art material and gain the confidence to offer clay to children back in their schools, centres or homes.

✋🏽THIS IS A hands-on workshop where adults involved in early years can slow down, get involved in creative PROCESSES, and reconnect with UKU (CLAY), a magical material that comes straight from Papatūānuku.

MANY Centres, schools and homes THAT PROVIDE CLAY REGULARLY all vouch for clay as being the most popular art material. FOR EXAMPLE, at Villa Sophia, it is the thing most asked for from 2 to 10-year-olds!

Christmas does not need to be all about consumerism and throwing wrapping paper and single use plastic into our land fill.

We are bringing the gift of seasonal joy with this hands on Christmas themed workshop.

Nature inspired and Plastic Free.

Children making the old school way, with their own two hands and a whole lot of love!

🌳🐞🐦‍⬛🌼NATURE JOURNALS

1)We made the intentional choice to give the children journals made from recycled supermarket paper bags.
Would this help them to see help paper as not an endless commodity to consume, but something to treasure and make the most of? The paper had imperfections and was different to work with than freshly purchased paper. The children started their journals by designing a cover.

2)Emmi first thought of the idea of combining the pressed pansies with drawn flower stalks. This idea caught on as great ideas do within the group.

3)After two days of walking in Mātekai Park and coming back and reading “The Song of the Kauri” picture book, Levi was inspired to draw the majestic Kauri tree. Meanwhile his sister, Ella, captured all the feeling of a blossom tree on a blue sky spring day.

4) From the first day of Nature School the idea of documenting what we see in nature caught on. Birds, lady birds, butterflies, snails and even a very smiley faced maggot were drawn and painted!

5) The younger nature artists made beautiful collages from interesting cut out nature photos, Violet worked on her collage for ages. We were excited to see some children beginning to label their drawings, as Jack did with his sweet drawing of piwaiwaka/ fantail.

6) Five year old Leo, wrote independently in his Journal. “I loved the Nature walk. It was fun,” he documented a very special memory in Nature. Leo walked with Hari, making a new friend as we explored Mātekai Park. Leo drew the two new friends together.

7 & 😎 Neons’ birds; kingfisher, kereru, sparrow, song thrush and there were more birds too. Neon drew so accurately he could be an orthInologist, a bird expert. Neon was inspired by illustrations in a nature book of ngā manu of Aotearoa, both native and introduced.

9 & 10) Children have created a taonga, a keepsake all of their own, with treasured memories of being a Nature Explorer.
It’s a book/journal that will take you everywhere!
