The support NIS gets from KidsCan means much more than just food, clothing, and shoes – it removes barriers to attendance, learning, and basic human dignity. The cost of living crisis is hitting our community and our tamariki hard. More families than ever are being pushed beyond their limits.
If you can, please consider donating $20 to support the 20% of children experiencing food insecurity this winter.

Football Girls Year 8 Zone Day
Our Year 8 Girls Team showed amazing determination to win this year's Zone Day. The day started slowly with a 0-0 draw against Orewa B, 0-2 loss to Murrays Bay A, and 1-0 wins over Kristin and Pinehurst. The team showed amazing grit which only improved as the day went on.
We advanced to the quarter-finals against the much-fancied Belmont who were undefeated with 4 wins and a +12 goal aggregate to our +0. Ultimately, it did not matter as we repelled wave after wave of attacks, shut down their key goal scorer, and finished regulation time at 0-0. The match went to penalties where we took an early lead that we never relinquished.
The team progressed into the Semis against Northcross where we mounted repetitive attacks at goal whilst repelling all opposition attacks. Ultimately the match again went to penalties and the same scenario played out as we advanced to the final.
In the final, we had a rematch against Murrays Bay A who had beaten us in pool play. Again, neither team could score, again, we went to penalties, and again our team came through!
The team have now qualified for the Auckland Championships on Wed 3 June.

Squash Zone Day
On Thursday 14 May Northcote Intermediate fielded 11 teams in the North Harbour Zone Day. Most had not played before. After a crash course in squash at the YMCA the day before, we descended on the North Harbour Squash Club where we acquitted ourselves very well. Special congratulations to our top girls' team of Sofie, Charlotte, and Maddisyn that won the Girls Title!

Today we had two teams competing at the Auckland LitEx competition (like MathEx but with literacy questions) And they did us proud, we didn’t place but were in the top quarter of schools competing. You had to have a vast range of knowledge - from knowing where Patricia Grace was born to how many pages are in the first Dog Man book. Well done teams on your fantastic efforts, we are very proud of you. 👍 📚

What amazing opportunities we have for our tamariki. On Tuesday 80 students attended the Intermediate Writers Festival line up. They were treated to presentations from David Robertson, Kenneth Chapman, Claire Mabel and Dr Hinemoa Elder. Authors spoke a lot about inspiration and being resilient to keep going and believe in what you are creating and great things will happen.
Today 40 students attended the Secondary School program and were in awe of Gilbert Enoka, Josh Silver, Nikita Gill, and Matariki Bennett & Manaia Tuwhare-Hoani. The first two speakers spoke about mindset and the importance of looking after your Mental Health. Nikita took us to mythical lands and then Wow!! The students were in for a treat with live Spoken Word and Slam Poetry.
