Some days reaffirm my faith in the whanau of New Zealand performing arts.
After my wife was returned safely to us on Friday crack of dawn after conducting two choirs and a string Orchestra the night before. The new day
7am Today my wife and family attended dress rehearsal for Studio 246.
I dropped son and an Olaf costume off, found out I will be a playing a Louisiana based retiree named Velma next weekend. Returned home to teach 2 hours with young artists.
Then returned to rehearse Velma and Vernon as cohost with Maddie Brodie Nee Bullock who trained with me as a youth. Full circle moment as she shared her full registration pending as a performing arts teacher.
Then back home for one more lesson before heading to the city to celebrate a relatively new friend W***y de Wit an icon of New Zealand Television and Radio honoured by friends. Hi generosity of spirit, kindness and genuine love for this newest Gold card owner, was heart felt and touching. Bumping into a collection of former Harmonious trained folks Joshua Downs, Patrick Cunneen and Jocelyn Scott with more good news of professional contracts and a newly fully registered teacher.
Then to the Aotea Centre to enjoy a light dinner with family friends before watching my charges current, former and future some Dreamers some Harmonious all played at a nicely paced, well acted, nicely directed Miles Ford and driven The Wizard of Oz. The show merited the large ovation and the joy post show was infectious spontaneous and a pleasure to witness. The arts whanau in New Zealand is truly beautiful.

Very pleased to see Miah Evelyn receive an award to recognise her exceptional talent.

How we love the support of Tamworth locals, especially when it directly benefits our students!

In July this year, we welcomed a new scholarship supporting the next generation of artists, with the introduction of the inaugural Simmonds Family Scholarship.

The partial scholarship, valued at $1500, was established by Michelle and Stephen Simmonds, and will be awarded each year to a deserving student of the Junior Course, with the recipient chosen by the Simmonds Family. Its first recipient is Tamworth singer-songwriter Miah Evelyn, who impressed with her polished, emotional performance and unique voice.

The scholarship carries deep meaning for the Simmonds family. Their daughter, Golden Guitar winner Aleyce Simmonds, is a graduate of both the Junior and Senior Academy courses and now mentors up-and-coming students as a group leader.

“For us, offering this scholarship is about supporting the wonderful foundation of country music,” Michelle and Stephen said. “It’s also our way of carrying on Joan Douglas’ vision with the original Junior Academy, which was known as Camerata. The Academy is very special to our family; it was Aleyce’s first formal introduction to the country music family, and being involved in those first two years of the Junior Academy is something we’ve always held close to our hearts.”

Miah said she was “excited and extremely grateful” to be the first recipient of the Simmonds Family Scholarship.

“The Simmonds family are great supporters of the country music industry, they are well respected in the community and run a local business (Simmonds Kitchens) in Tamworth, my hometown,” she said.

“I also had the opportunity during the Junior Academy to work with Aleyce Simmonds, who is a country star in her own right, which makes this scholarship even more special to me. Being the first to receive the Simmonds Family Scholarship is a huge honour and a privilege that I am very proud of.”

Congratulations Miah and thanks so much to Michelle and Stephen for their ongoing support of The Academy.
