I teach level 3 apiculture for Pacific Coast Technical Institute in Hamilton and Whitianga

This group are students from Mercury Bay Area School opening hives for the very first time 🥹

I love being able to experience all the wonders of bees through the new eyes of my students

Beekeeping is learnt hands on

Fun fact: larvae do not p**p in their cells because their mouth hole is not connected to their butt hole 🤣🤣🤣

When this tube connects, they can p**p for the first time (yay for them!)

They use this first p**p to help spin the cocoon they pupate inside 😬 eww p**p cocoon 🤣🤣🤢

If you Uncap a big fat pre-pupa (that's a capped larva) and see the line, don't fret! It's just it's little intestine tube 😁

AFB checking!

Start at the bottom box
Work through each frame systematically
Shake the bees off so you can identify the capped brood
Uncap ANYTHING that looks chewed, sunken, discoloured, greasy, or just plain odd

If it's a larva and it's white 👍
If it's a larva and it's not white: More investigation is required!!! 😬

Perform the ropiness test: stick a match stick into the cell you want to investigate, swirl the contents, then lift out the stick

If the larval material ropes out more than a cm then snaps back, it's highly likely you have AFB 😱

If you're not certain, get a second opinion from your local AFB authority. Here in Aotearoa that would be NZ Bee health & Biosecurity NZ Bee Health and Biosecurity

You may also have AFB swab tests that you can use to confirm in a lab

Follow all laws in your country in regards to AFB to not only protect your bees, but all the honeybees in your area 🫶

Larva not lava 🤣🤣🤣

They are baby bees 🥹 Queenie lays an egg which hatches into a little grub called a larva

These larva are the only form of the honey bee that grows larger! Once a bee pupates and hatches it doesn't get any bigger

The larvae are fed so much that they grow to about 1500X their original weight 🤯🤯🤯

One of the reasons is the amazing royal jelly they receive when they are young and also the fact that the nurse bees feed each larva approx every 45seconds 🤯🤯🤯

Mind actually blown 🤯

Varroa destructor

The number 1 killer of honeybees around the world 😭

This little (although huge in comparison to other parasites) parasitic mite jumped from its natural host, Apis cerena, onto our honeybees, Apis mellifera.

Our bees did not know how to live with this new parasite and the life cycle of A. mellifera allows the varroa to breed even more! So the consequences were catastrophic 😢

The worlds scientists are trying their best to limit the destruction that this little mite is causing by breeding stronger bees, with more hygienic traits, as well as trying to work with the varroa to limit how it breeds

Humans caused this catastrophe by moving honeybees into places they wouldn't naturally go so humans are trying to fix it

And I'm all for that 🫶
