Are you interested in training as a Healthcare Assistant? 🤔
And it is rewarding work say WITT students Laura and Kyan, who spoke to The MOST FM breakfast host Bobi today (pictured to the left and right of Bobi).
They’ve nearly finished the six-month programme to gain the NZ Certificate in Health & Wellbeing (Level 3) Health Assistant 🤩🫶
Laura decided to change careers from customer service admin to hands-on carer before AI stole her job. She was a bit nervous about returning to study in her 50s but she’s loving it. “It’s been so welcoming in the class. Just fantastic!”
Kyan felt a pull towards working with people after years as a tradesman. He’d been doing some community support work and enjoyed it 🙂
Students learn basic care techniques (washing, feeding as well as helping with mobility, lifting and health assessments) and go on placements for real-world experience.
“I’ve been going home feeling much more fulfilled, just helping people out each day – it’s awesome,” Kyan says.
A genuine desire to care for people in need, to make a difference to their wellbeing is Laura’s motivation – and is at the heart of being a healthcare assistant, she feels 😇
“We see a client as a real person – not just someone who needs to be washed or fed. I think that’s the core of it – compassion and treating people with dignity.” 👍
The next intake for this programme starts 20 July, so you’ll be qualified by Christmas. It involves two days a week on campus + placement hours.
With a WITT qualification you learn to competently look after elderly and disabled people in rest homes or in the community and there are up to 10 new placements available at the Taranaki Base Hospital 🗻

Waste not! 🪣
New Plymouth District Council's Resource Recovery & Sustainability team joined WITT's Wellbeing Expo to show how reducing food waste helps both our wallets and the environment 😇
After a quick info session, ākonga and staff tested their food waste knowledge with a quiz. Congrats to quiz winner Paige Henderson, who received her prize recently! 👏🌟
Here’s what we found:
o Half knew how to store leftovers safely.
o One third understood the impacts of food waste.
o One quarter knew how much food the average Kiwi wastes.
The average NZ household wastes 86kg of edible food each year. Locally, one third of what goes in red bins is compostable — mostly food waste 🤔😏
It’s great to see our community keen to cut food waste, including using the green food scraps bin 👍
