Music really can be powerful.
If you want to give your child a real academic and social advantage these days, learning a musical instrument is truly a superpower. Today I watched twenty young musicians take the stage at the Methodist Centre (formerly Whiteley Memorial Church) and win over the hearts of everyone in the room.
The Taranaki Youth Orchestra powered through a lively programme of familiar classics and absolutely shone. An audience of parents, teachers, and local school students were treated to an engaging, entertaining, and wonderfully interactive performance—expertly led by the brilliant conductor Rosa Scaffidi. Her humour, energy, and warmth make her the perfect musical director to harness and elevate the exuberance of these talented young players.
Everyone left smiling, inspired, and reminded of the magic music brings to our community.
There’s another chance to see the Taranaki Youth Orchestra at this venue this Saturday at 3pm—come along and experience it for yourself. Koha appreciated.

2025! Watch out, here we come!
Our first event of the year is just one week away.
Our January Academy is where we explore a variety of music to select our programme for the year. This is a great time for new players to jump in and have a go as everyone is learning from scratch and we don't have pressure of a performance.
Some of our repertoire:
Procession of the Sardar
Star Trek
A Night on the Bare Mountain
We always welcome new players. Our advised entry level is grade 4, however, string players can do well before that especially if they already play the piano, ask your teacher, or just roll up and have a go.

Tuesday 21st and Wednesday 22nd, 10-4, in the church part of the New Plymouth Methodist Centre on Liardet St.
