Kinderen Early Childhood Education.
6th October 2024
To all whānau, present and past.
Only four months ago, I announced heartbreaking news that we had to close the doors of our Kinderen little centre, after 38 years of service.
Now it is time to announce that Kinderen preschool must close. After 31 years of being devoted to Kinderen I have tried to keep this centre open, but the universe is against me. When looking at the data between January 2023 and December 2023 it was reported New Zealand wide, about 173 different types of ECE services closed, 88 centres were teacher-led centres like ours.
Kinderen took pride in the excellent care and education for our children with quality small numbers, high ratio of teachers, it is just not affordable to maintain this model of care in small centres without extra help from the Ministry of Education with funding, not feeling comfortable charging parents more than they earn on a weekly wage, it is with a broken heart to announce that our last day is 31st October 2024.
I would like to express my gratitude for all the love and support from teachers and parents, wishing you well for your future ahead.
Our next steps
The next three weeks will be filled with fun and laughter. If there are past families that would like to come back to visit us after hours, for a family gathering please contact me.
Everything must go.
Resources for sale, household items for sale. Kinderen has always used the environment as a third teacher and has been very arty. You will find some great deals or even free natural resources that we have collected in past years. I am not planning a garage sale but sell items by appointment after hours, so give Shona a call or text on 027 4351806.

Tamariki at Kinderen have been enjoying doing puzzles today. This process encourages tamariki to think out problems while using hands and fingers for coordination. They are able to build on there communication skills while experiencing symbols of their culture including that of numbers and other mathematical and literacy concepts.

Kinderen - Nature in the heart of the city

Our trips in our local community

Spring is in the air. It just takes a little walk down the road to Bunnings where we purchased some plants for us to plant in the garden. The tamariki loved getting to choose some flowers to take back to Kinderen choosing all different colours, sizes and types.

Kinderen Preschool
2 years to 6 years
Space’s available part time or full time.
Our Preschool has spaces available; we have a low staff ratio, this number is deliberately small to allow for a strong focus on building relationships with teachers and peers and learning through engagement with the environment and people.
Please contact Shona on 0274251806

At Kinderen we are committed to providing high quality care and education. Children learn and thrive at Kinderen because the children come first, and the staff work closely with parents and whānau to create a partnership that offers each child the highest quality individual care and learning opportunities possible.

I have been told that when one door closes, another one opens with a new opportunity.

Over the last month I have been overwhelmed with the support from staff and parents over this time and have really appreciated your kind words.

I spent last week with little centre garage sales and cleaning, the items that were left to sell are in my garage waiting for some market days.
Today, I handed over the keys of the little centre, after having my last look around after 31 years of working in a Kinderen office.

Looking forward, I am excited to spend more time at the preschool.

My new office will be set up at home where most of the Financials will be done in the morning. Starting in June I plan to be at the preschool between 1.30 pm to 6pm. I am looking forward to spending more time with our excellent teachers and tamariki and seeing first hand the great activities the children are experiencing.

If you have any suggestions, I will always be available for a chat or even a coffee at a local cafe.

Kinderen Day Care Centre Ltd -T/A Kinderen Early Childhood Education

To all Whānau, present and past
It is with sadness that today Kinderen ‘A’ Day Care Centre announces that we are closing our Little Centre (Baby Centre), our last day being May 17th, 2024.
This decision is heartbreaking for everyone involved, and all of us have done our best to avoid such actions. However, due to several factors, unfortunately it has become impossible to remain open.
Kinderen Preschool is still open and operating normally and will remain to do so.
Kinderen Day Care started in 1986 in Karen Vandenberg’s family home on Gover Street in 1986. The preschool opened eight months later in its current location at 31 Buller Street. In 1991 the Baby Centre moved their location from the family home to 66 Buller Street.
Kinderen appreciates the support and respect that our families have given us in the past couple of weeks. I wish all our staff here at the little centre well with their new adventures.
Karen and I would like to extend an invite to all past and present families and teachers, to come for the afternoon for a catch up and to share stories. This will be held at 1pm on Sunday 19th May 2024 at the Little Centre.

Thank you.
Shona & John Flannery

Kinderen is passionate about inviting and creating diverse flavors within our meals, that are also kind to our tamariki bellies. Simple meals give space for flavor combinations to be the attraction and the tamariki can experiment with their likes and dislikes. As the kai cook for Kinderen, my passion in food is focusing on texture and simplicity with nutrition. I’m also passionate about kind kai, kai that enhances the beauty of huawhenua (vegetables) and huarakau (fruit)
We wanted to share some kai our tamariki have been enjoying coming into a new season.
Sushi balls filled with avocado, tofu, kumara, spring onion and cucumber. Enjoyed with some soy sauce or mayonnaise
Sugar free chickpea, pumpkin, dark chocolate blondie. Available in gluten free too.
