What is Empowered Parenting?

Empowered Parenting is "Power With Parenting".

It embodies a core belief that everyone in the family is inherently worthy of sovereignty, dignity, empowerment and respect.

What does that mean?

As loving guides on our kids' journeys, we're excited to discover the unique differences, needs, quirks, talents, and dreams that make them them. We're all in, ready to tailor our approach to these beautiful idiosyncrasies, not fight against them.

And we're more than willing to question those dusty, old-school parenting philosophies that pile expectations and responsibilities on our little ones that don't fit their growing minds and hearts or the world we want to imagine.

When we see that light bulb moment for what it is and see that our young ones are just mirroring our behaviours - and they can't help it, it's a game-changer. Suddenly, the choice is in our hands. We can only ever steer our ship, even though we often go to great lengths to direct the sails of our children. We set up scenarios for them to change, scold them when they veer off course and cheer them on when they follow the path we like. It's an instinct to take control. But here's a gentle nudge to remind you: the only one we can genuinely command is ourselves. And let me tell you, you're doing a whole world of things shaping your child's tricky behaviours. And the best part is...

It's far easier to change YOU than to change anyone else.

Every nervous system is as unique as a snowflake. So it can take a bit of trial and error to find the calming tools that work for you. For some, counting breaths is the ticket, for some, orienting in the here and now by naming things you can see, hear and smell is what brings them back to the green zone. I'd love to hear if you've found the thing or things that works for you. Let me know below.

1️⃣ Your nervous system and your child's nervous system are inextricably linked. If your system is activated in the flight or fight pathway, your child's system will go there, too. Their behaviour will reflect a system that is sensing threat.
2️⃣ . When your stress levels are low, you have more capacity to teach, guide, nurture, and set limits—all of which lead to more consistent positive behaviour. When they are high, you literally have no capacity for these things.
3️⃣ . Your children learn from what you do, not what you say. They'll eventually learn to do the same when they see you managing your stress healthily.

The bottom line: Taking care of yourself is one of the most powerful ways you can support your child in learning positive behaviour skills. It's anything but selfish.
