Caught on camera! 📸

We set up the game cam to monitor the property, but mostly we're just getting high-definition updates on our duck pool parties!

A little throwback to yesterday's icy start ❄️

My poor nasturtium leaves got completely burned by the freeze, but Donald captured how pretty the garden looked before the sun came out and thawed it all!

"Every sprinkle carries a sense of the landscape that surrounds us..." 🏔️

Reading customer notes like this stops us right in our tracks. When we started crafting Mangamahoe Magic Seasoning, our goal was to capture the essence of our home - grown at the base of Mt Taranaki, nourished by mountain rain, and blended with love.

Thank you, Caroline, for taking the time to write such a poetic review. Notes like yours make every cold morning in the herb garden completely worth it! 🌿

Taking advantage of a gorgeous, clear winter day to check in on our hardest workers: the bees! 🐝☀️

Winter is a critical time for hives, and while we don’t want to open them up and let the precious heat escape, we can still monitor them carefully. Today was all about "hefting" the hives—gently lifting one side from the base to judge the weight. It’s a simple, intuitive way to estimate how much honey stores they have left to get them through the cold months without disturbing their winter cluster.

To help our pollinators along, it is wonderful to have robust winter food sources thriving nearby. Out on our block, the stars of the winter forage right now are:

Tagasaste (Tree Lucerne): An absolute lifeline for bees in the colder months, bursting with high-quality winter pollen and nectar.

Escallonia: Hardy, resilient, and providing a steady source of forage.

Rosemary: Putting out those beautiful little blue flowers right through the cold.

Rangiora (Māori Toilet Paper Bush): Providing a brilliant burst of winter gold and vital early nectar for the hive! 🐝💛

What's blooming or happening in your garden on this beautiful winter weekend? 🌸👇

A crisp, sunny winter day has been the perfect backdrop for getting busy in the Blue Petal kitchen! ☀️

We are currently topping up the shelves at The Collaboration space with a fresh batch of Mangamahoe Magic Seasoning jars. If you haven't tried this blend yet, it is pure kitchen inspiration in a jar. With its rich cumin base, bright citrus notes and warm smoked paprika, it’s incredibly versatile - beautiful as a rub for winter roasts, sprinkled over roasted root vegetables or stirred into a hearty winter stew.

Speaking of winter warmth, we still have a few spaces open for our next Workshop at The Collaboration next weekend! We know times are a bit heavy and tight for everyone right now, which is exactly why we created this space - to gather by the fire, have fun and share some collective wellness.

For more info and the booking check https://www.thecollaborationnz.nz/shop/herbal-cocktails-mocktails-and-shrubs-blue-petal-workshop/.

In the meantime, pop into The Collaboration space to grab a jar of Mangamahoe Magic and smell it for yourself! ✨

Power was out (again!), but the plastic house was warm, dry and the perfect refuge on a wet, cold winter day. 🌿

Today was all about a good, satisfying seasonal tidy-up. Our summer tomatoes have officially finished and been pulled out, making room for the next cycle.
Meanwhile, the resilient Rocoto chilies have been harvested and pruned back, though a few brave ones are still trying to keep going!
The turmeric is tucked up safely in the ground, left to do its thing until the next checkpoint.
There is such a nice feeling in bringing order to the winter garden.

How are you spending these wild winter days? 🌶️
