Emergency services respond to incident at Christchurch daycare 05/12/2025

The chemical burn incident in ECE today is devastating!

Dishwashing liquid and a caustic cleaning agent are nothing alike. The texture, smell and feel are totally different. When something this basic goes wrong, it tells us there are serious gaps in training, systems, and workload pressures. These are the foundations of keeping children safe.

When this happens in a big for-profit chain, it highlights the deeper issue: the constant pressure to run lean, stay efficient and satisfy shareholders. That pressure lands heavily on frontline staff… and ultimately on tamariki.

What makes this even more concerning is that it’s happening while licensing and oversight are being reduced. Deregulation does not improve quality — it removes the protections that are supposed to prevent this kind of harm.

ECE isn’t a low-accountability business model. It’s high-trust, high-risk work with children.
Safety, training, and proper oversight are non-negotiable.

This should never have happened. It should be a wake-up call for the government!

Emergency services respond to incident at Christchurch daycare RNZ understands that five children and two adults have been transported to hospital after suffering chemical burns.

I'm getting excited for our upcoming Professional Development workshop — it might feel like boot camp because in just one hour we’ll really only be scratching the surface of this mahi...but rest assured I'll be delivering the goods! 💪

And yes — it’s face to face! Don’t get me wrong, I love the flexibility of online learning, but in an industry built on relationships… need I say more? 🤝✨

Roll on 12 November — let’s talk Internal Evaluation and Quality Improvement Planning that really counts. 📋💬

One last thing before I clock off for the long week-end....and you be sure to enjoy yours too! 😊

🌿 Did you know…

"ERO expects all early childhood services to use the Indicators of Quality for Early Childhood Education: What Matters Most in their internal evaluation and planning for improvement. These same indicators form the basis of ERO’s external evaluations" (Te Ara Poutama, p.4).

Yet, so many centres I work with tell me they don’t really know what the indicators are — or how to use them effectively.

The indicators are a powerful tool to help you understand what quality looks like, how to measure improvement and how to show the impact of your practice on children’s learning and wellbeing.

If your team would like to build confidence using the indicators in your internal evaluation and QIP, I can help. Let’s make them meaningful, not just mandatory. 💪✨

A growing number of centres I'm working with are seeing real, measurable shifts in their internal evaluation practices — moving from 'working towards' to 'embedding' effective, sustainable approaches.

When done well, internal evaluation goes far beyond compliance. It strengthens governance processes, builds capability and fosters a culture of reflection and continuous improvement. The result — more confident leaders, more cohesive teams and ultimately, stronger outcomes for tamariki.

It’s incredibly rewarding to see these changes taking hold — the payoff of purposeful, ongoing support and partnership.

If your centre is ready to take that next step, let’s chat about how tailored support can make a difference. I’m locally based in Nelson and always happy to pop in for a kōrero. ☕

Lately, I’ve noticed just how many workshops and courses are available online. They promise flexibility and self-paced learning—“do it in your own time, when it suits you”—but all too often I hear the same stories afterwards:

“I finished an online course but I had no idea how to implement it.”

“Once I logged off, I logged out mentally, as well.”

“I’m too tired after a day on the floor to watch a screen, let alone retain the learning.”

I get it. Professional learning without context can be overwhelming. It’s not that the content isn’t worthwhile—it’s that every centre is different. What works in one place doesn’t automatically fit another.

More importantly, teachers are relational people. We learn best through interaction, connection and collaboration—not through impersonal screens. So it makes sense that the most effective learning and development is relational, tailored and hands-on.

That’s my approach—and it’s a significant point of difference in today’s digital world. Based in Nelson, I work alongside you and your team, tailoring support to your context and embedding it so it truly sticks.

I specialise in governance, leadership, internal evaluation, quality improvement planning, PGCs and customised professional development.

My goal is simple: turning theory into practical, sustainable change—helping your centre work smarter, not harder.

If this resonates with you, let’s start a conversation about what relational, hands-on support could look like in your centre.

✨ Welcome on board Richmond Preschool! ✨

Stacey knows the value of working smarter, not harder - creating the right structures so her team can focus on what matters most: tamariki.

We've already kicked things off and made some great early progress. It's exciting to see the team leaning into change and growth, and I'm looking forward to the journey ahead. 🙌

If you're curious about how I can support your centre to do the same, give me a call:
