ADHD & Writing Struggles? This Reflex Might Be to Blame ✍️🧠

If your ADHD child avoids writing or tires out quickly, it could be due to a retained primitive reflex called the Palmar Grasp Reflex. This reflex makes it harder for the hands to move independently — making writing feel like a full-body effort 😣✏️

⸻

🧪 Quick Palmar Reflex Test at Home:
1️⃣ Ask your child to lay their hand flat
2️⃣ Draw an “X” at the base of the palm
3️⃣ 👉 If the fingers curl involuntarily = reflex is still active

This means the brain still treats light touch as a “grip” cue — not ideal for handwriting or fine motor control.

⸻

🖐️ Exercises to Help Integrate This Reflex:
🔁 Lightly scratch the palm for a couple of minutes daily to desensitize the reflex
🧈 Use therapy putty (the stiff kind!) for resistance-based hand work
🔊 Try a vibrating ball or peanut — vibration through the hands helps stimulate small muscles and calm the reflex

🛒 You can find all of these tools on Amazon!

⸻

💡 A few minutes a day can make writing easier, less frustrating, and less tiring for your child — and help those little hands wake up and work smarter.

Many people with dyslexia also have Executive Functioning problems.
This is why scaffolding ,chunking instructions down, electronic diaries etc are so important.
Thank you for this great image!

The thing about anxiety is, it is usually responding to threats that don’t actually exist, or are wayyyy less catastrophic than anxiety makes them out to be. Don’t believe everything your anxiety tells you. Trust that it is trying to keep you safe, but doesn’t have all of the right information.
