Great news. We have had great success in finding lamprey nests this week. Four were found with eggs and adults and one with adults but yet to have eggs. All were healthy! Here is a rare shot of the mature female - notice the prominent rope on her back (the males have the pouch) and how emaciated she is (though she will stick around vigorously defending her young for some time). We will continue to check the nests through the summer.

It was a highly valued food of Māori, that was harvested at the beginning of the Māori new year. It leaves the ocean during winter and early spring, migrating up freshwater streams to spawn.
