Hampden Street School is a large contributing (Year 0 – 6) kura that is located approximately 2 km from the Nelson C*D and is adjacent to Nelson College. Established in 1868, Hampden Street School is one of the older primary schools in the Nelson region. Currently, the school has a roll of approximately 480 students. Students come from all over the Nelson city area although most live nearby. In 2016 the school introduced an enrolment scheme to assist with managing our roll. The majority of our year six leavers go on to Nelson Intermediate, and a significant number, around 25-30%, to the private preparatory schools at the Boys and Girls Colleges. Our New Entrants come from nine preschools and kindergartens in the Nelson City area, however, Nelson South and Rutherford Street Kindergartens are the largest contributing early childhood centres to Hampden Street School. The school believes strongly in a student-led approach to learning and has invested significantly in recent years to create engaging Innovative Learning Environments across our kura. The school’s pedagogy has been informed and driven by the OECD Center for Education Research and Innovation’s 7 Principles of Learning (2015), and Waikato University’s Cultural Relationships for Responsive Pedagogy (2017). The school has excellent facilities, which include a large hall, a modern library and multimedia room, a swimming complex featuring two pools, a sports field, Tiger Turf court, and three adventure playgrounds. The school is currently operating 19 classrooms. Hampden Street School is well resourced and all classrooms are equipped with the very latest IT equipment. The school has a large number of Chromebooks and iPads, and has recently invested in a large amount of digital technology tools and devices. These resources have been made possible by a combination of careful budgeting by the Principal and BOT and the hard work and generosity of the HSS Fundraising Committee. Our comprehensive Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) programme provides many “hands-on” experiences for students including regular visits to our local museum and tramping through the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park or sailing in Mistletoe Bay in the Marlborough Sounds on Year 5/6 camp. In recent years we have introduced an overnight camp experience for our Year 3 and 4 students. Our 2022 targets focus on areas around culturally sustainable practices, 21st Century pedagogy, student wellbeing, particularly during the current pandemic, and whānau engagement. These areas were identified following analysis of our data and of parent and staff surveys in 2021 and are in alignment with the achievement challenges identified by our Nelson City Community of Learning/Kāhui Ako ki Whakatū . Hampden Street School’s motto, Piki ake ki nga whetū/ Reach for the stars, extends beyond the classroom and into wider aspects of student education with success on the sports field, visual arts, environmental education, and drama.
