Ka rawe! Mat came and talked to the kids during our Marariki celebration last term. Now we know someone famous.

Hot off the press! ✨A huge congratulations to Mat Tait (Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, Ngāti Kuia, Rangitāne o Wairau), who has just been announced as the winner of the Russell Clark Award for Illustration for Kupe and the Great Octopus of Muturangi. His te reo Māori edition, Kupe me te Wheke nui a Muturangi, won the award for a book written in te reo Māori.

Mat’s extraordinary retelling brings to life the story of Kupe and Te Wheke-a-Muturangi — a story deeply woven through Te Tauihu, and the pūrākau at the heart of the new playspace taking shape in Whakatū.

The judges praised Mat’s bold illustrative style and vibrant use of colour, saying it makes the story “pop off every single page”. Ka mau te wehi, Mat. Well deserved recognition. ❤️
