A wonderful two days at our annual Hieke-NPA Conference. Organised this year by our Stoke/ Tahunanui Cluster, we kicked things off with a very special powhiri on the shore of Rotoiti, led by local iwi, Ngāti Apa. It was very special and moving ceremony. We enjoyed some great presentation from the likes of Perry Rush and Steve Maharey. Heading out on Rotoiti in Waka was a highlight for all.
After a tough year all the principals who attended loved the chance catch-up and network.
We were well supported by our wonderful sponsors. Craig, Don and Rob were thrilled to receive our Hieke-NPA study grants.

Great to have Perry Rush, our NZPF President, in our region today His key message was, “how can we rediscover the power, prestige, and humanity of our collective collective voice as educational leaders.” We had frank discussions on three key issues: the Accord, Kahui Ako future, and the principal Leadership Centre.

The first Principal's bus tour took place just before COVID-19 closed things down. John Armstrong, Di Webb and Don McLean spent two fantastic days in the Tauranga area visiting schools (and seeing some local sights). We were hosted by Bruce Jepson, principal of Te Akau ki Papamoa School. Bruce's school is a one on one digital school and is a true example of culturally responsive pedagogy in action. We enjoyed our day there and came away with many ideas around CR4RP, the inclusion of te reo across the school in an authentic way, the effective use of iPads across the school and many practical ideas around property and staff organisation. The second day saw us visit Te Puke Intermediate. This decile three school has turned intermediate learning on its head with its learning centres model. Children grouped into theme-based classes according to their interests and they learn in that context across the curriculum. In the afternoon we headed to Te Kura o Matapihi. This was a full immersion Kura kaupapa school. It was a warm welcoming place, which was well supported by the three local iwi. They were doing some great work on an interest-based approach to learning and the use of STEM in a Kura kaupapa setting. Our host Tui made us so welcome. It was a lovely way to finish our tour. No trip to the bay without a walk up the Mount and while in Te Puke we stopped by at the Comvita factory for a bit of honey and a quick coffee.

Hieke-Nelson Principals' Association held their annual conference at the Alpine Lodge at St Arnaud. This years event was hosted by the Waimea/Richmond Cluster. With a theme of Wellbeing, there was a wide variety of activities from Massage to mountain biking. A highlight was a boat trip up Lake Rotoiti to Lakehead Hut and a three-hour walk back to St Arnaud. We also enjoyed some excellent speakers with topics around wellbeing and leadership.
