Although Pania Toastmasters is no longer holding meetings, congratulations to Bex, Tamara and Jacqui for achieving Triple Crown Awards.
Toastmasters is for everyone and it’s over to individual members to decide what they wish to achieve.
A Triple Crown Award means completing three levels of speeches in a Toastmaster year.
Accept the challenge.
Have a plan.
Stay focused.

Even though Pania is not holding lunchtime meetings for now, Napier Toastmasters is alive and well and welcomes guests.

Thank you to all our members, past and present, to our many guests over 40+ years and to our many followers.

It certainly is a ‘people thing’ captured by the lyrics our Toastmaster shared at our meeting last week. For Pania, deciding to close the curtains for now was unpredictable as our people go in their different directions.

BINGO! Our TM created individual bingo cards for a Table Topics with a difference. Each speaker selected a number to be given a question and all attending were invited to listen to tick off the 12 words on their bingo card.

Well done Bex for your creativity. It was a fun way to include members and past members invited to attend what will be Pania’s last meeting for now. Lots of laughter as we realised we could ‘cheat’ and include words on our own card when we were speaking.

Yes, sadly Pania Toastmasters are taking a break. We’ve packed up the lights, the stopwatch and bell, the lectern, flags, badges and all they represent until some future time when we are sure Pania lunchtime Toastmasters will rise like a Phoenix and many new members will find their voice.

A HUGE thank you to all members, past members, visitors, supporters, the many committee members over the past 40 years and a bit and District 112. It’s been a blast, the walls of our different venues still hold the memories, the laughter and the wisdoms shared by many.

Pania Toastmasters … THANK YOU.

Well done Tamara and Bex. It is always great to reward commitment and completion of the different components of the Toastmasters offerings. At today’s meeting Jacqui presented a Pania pen and chocolate fish to Tamara for completing Level 3 of her second Toastmasters Path and Bex for completing Level 5 and completing a Toastmaster Path.

We also applaud both for their tireless involvement and efficiency on our committee over the past years. You are both so appreciated.

Congratulations Tamara from Pania Toastmasters for winning the Area R3 Humorous Contest and also completing projects for your Triple Crown Award.

What is a Triple Crown Award? It’s a Toastmasters lapel pin awarded to Members who complete any three levels of a Toastmasters ‘Path’. A Path is a series of projects with different speaking objectives.

Great meeting today chaired very proficiently by our newest Toastmaster Olivia (L). Best Speaker Craig (R) with a motivational farewell speech related to the difficulties of change, although comparing how change is needed for future happiness. We wish Craig well for his move and making new memories.

Best Evaluator was Briony (centre) who evaluated Liz’s speech explaining the benefits of homeopathy, while completing a project requiring her to ‘manage a difficult audience’. To assist with any ‘witchcraft’ comments Liz came armed with humour and her ‘stick’ minus the broom bristles.

Our second speaker Tamara gave a well-structured inspirational speech titled ‘Life by Design’ beginning with ‘one of those days’ I’m sure we can all relate to. Tamara questioned what drives us and encouraged us to plan for success with excellent tips.

Being a member of Toastmasters is always rewarding when observing newer members step into meeting leadership roles, and witnessing the confidence and growth of speakers and evaluators.

While it’s disappointing dwindling numbers mean we’re no longer able to continue to offer a lunchtime meeting option, Toastmasters is alive and well in Hawke’s Bay - with clubs in Napier, Hastings, Havelock North, and Central Hawke’s Bay. Please message for more information.

Do you know about Darwin’s orchid and Darwin’s moth? At today’s meeting Briony shared a fascinating historical story of how Darwin was crazy about orchids.

Charles Darwin, the botanist, was fascinated by the unusual Star orchid as it had a foot-long nectar spur, with the nectar itself pooled only at the very bottom. Darwin was quoted as saying “what insect can suck it?”

However, Darwin predicted that scientists would discover the orchid’s co-evolutionary partner: an insect with a proboscis more than a foot long. Two decades later, they did just that, documenting a subspecies of the Madagaskan hawkmoth. So the Star orchid and hawkmoth were renamed Darwin’s orchid and Darwin’s moth.

That’s what is so good about Toastmasters meetings, the unexpected.

Best speaker went to Briony and Best Evaluator to Craig who complimented Briony on her excellent vocal variety and turning a story about a moth into an entertaining story.
