The NZ Singing School Trust has this week made the difficult decision to not proceed with the school for 2023. Applications from students have been unexpectedly low, despite the Trust extending the application period.

"It is disappointing, but this is an unfortunate roll-on effect of Covid and the economic situation, and our discussions with our artistic Directors Christine Douglas and Mark Dorrell have led us to agree that there are insufficient student to continue," says Trust Chairwoman Helen Walker.

Applicants and tutors have been personally advised of the situation by email.

Congratulations to Felicity Tomkins on placing second in the Lexus! And Sarah Hubbard who was a finalist. A superb achievement for our past Singing School students and an opportunity to sing accompanied by the NZSO doesn't happen every year! Such a demanding competition for everyone, and you all sang wonderfully! Also as a personal Hawke's Bay note - congrats to local singer Emmanuel Fonoti Fuimaono for the scholarship!

After a glittering Grand Final featuring five wonderful NZ opera singers and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, one has been named the winner!

Head Judge Teddy Tahu Rhodes (pictured here with the Finalists) said, “It was an extremely difficult task to narrow it down to five finalists. This is the number one competition for opera singers in Aotearoa and the gala is always a fantastic night for everyone.”
