Our world is full of things with wings, both man-made and naturally occurring – bats, birds, insects, seeds, aeroplanes, gliders and helicopters. This resource explores how observing, learning about and imitating nature’s designs has significantly influenced our understanding of the science of flight.

Some very exciting news.

We’re really pleased to share some exciting news. The Government has confirmed House of Science as the supplier for the nationwide rollout of science and pūtaiao kits. Over time, this will enable us to provide curriculum‑aligned, hands‑on science kits for Years 0–8 learners in all state and state‑integrated schools and kura, helping teachers bring science to life in classrooms across the country.

Kit delivery will continue in selected regions based on our current reach, with the number of participating schools and regions increasing throughout the year. Full national coverage is expected by early to mid‑2027.

This is a significant milestone for our organisation and a real credit to the dedication of our team. It also reflects the encouragement, advocacy and goodwill of our wider House of Science community, including friends and supporters like you, and we’re very grateful for the role you’ve played in helping us get here.

The opportunity before us now is incredibly exciting, but there is a lot to do. We are in the process of refining our operating model to allow us to scale up effectively and deliver the contract with excellence. We’re also considering how we can continue working with our valued supporters and partners as we move into this next phase, and we look forward to exploring what that might look like in the months ahead.

We’re looking for a Resource Designer (Science & Pūtaiao)

House of Science is looking for a Resource Designer to join our growing team. This role is all about turning big science ideas into hands-on, curriculum-aligned learning experiences for Years 1–8, supporting teachers and inspiring students nationwide.

You’ll be designing and testing science activities, creating teacher resources, and helping build our national library of science and pūtaiao kits used in schools across New Zealand.

This could be for you if you:
• Enjoy writing, designing, and hands-on learning
• Care deeply about equitable access to great science resources
• Want your work to have real, national impact
