Wild deer in the Hawke’s Bay are costing farmers about $10,000 a year off gross margin, with many properties carrying far more deer than owners realise, says primary sector economist Peter MacIntyre.

His Hawke’s Bay-based research found one farmer who thought he had 50 deer flew a drone over and counted 300.

“People are underestimating how many deer they’ve got by about five to six times,” he says.
An average deer eats about a tonne of dry matter a year.
