House of Science kits are for 5 to 13 year aged students and will be delivered by Cathy Morgan! Cathy will be supported by Natasha Macaulay and Megan.
Blanche Collins is running the set up and admin of this education group and assisting on the day where needed.
Venue - Greenmeadows East Community Hall. Tait drive. Greenmeadows Napier.
Fortnightly Fridays during term time starting 3rd Feb 2023.
Time - Please arrive at 12.15 so your young person is ready to learn at 12.30. Sessions will finish by 2. 30 but may be earlier depending on the lesson and needs of the day.
About your lead teacher Cathy Morgan in her own words. "
I have always been fascinated by nature. From a young age I was a keen bird watcher. I loved physics at school too. I studied botany (plants) at Canterbury University, and went on to do a Master of Science in forest ecology at Lincoln University, monitoring the impacts of browsing by deer in our native forests. I was lucky enough to work for DoC for many years in the 1990s in the Kawekas, Fiordland and Stewart Island. I then studied massage therapy and taught botany, research and massage to adult students at the Lotus Holistic Centre in Hastings. I've never taught kids, but I am passionate about science education and super excited to co-facilitate these House of Science kits with our awesome home education whanau".
While the kits and hall hirage are being sponsored we are charging $3 per child per session. This will go towards funding kits and hirage for House of Science to continue into 2024! As this is largely free we want to pay it forward to the future house of science participants in 2024.
Teachers and support people are not receiving any monies to run this for you and are giving their own time, petrol and knowledge for free.
Their are a number of kits for the house of science team to choose from and we will give you notice of the upcoming sessions as we determine them. In each kit is a range of activities related to various science themes. Many of not all are hands on and this is a fantastic opportunity to feed curious minds. We are beyond excited to bring this to you!
This is not a drop off event but you may nominate one parent to watch their own plus your children if you wish. You may be asked to help with learning stations, reading and hands on experiments and clean up. We appreciate your help in this area in advance.
If you bring younger children, please supervise them. It will be up to the teachers of the day to decide if an activity is suitable for them to observe. Their is a large grass area for them to play outside, a smaller meeting room for them to play in and their are kitchen and toilet facilities.
As it's around lunchtime please make sure your young person is feed and has a drinking bottle with them and snacks if needed. If your child has any learning or behavioural needs please pm a member of the team and we can discuss this with you.
We ask for your commitment with attendance so your child can get familiar with the group and to build on knowledge. As it is anticipated that this will be popular we don't want empty seats (we know sickness will happen and is expected).
