Where your child studies matters more than how long they study.

One of the first things I talk to new students about — before we even touch content — is how and where they study at home.

Because a student spending 2 hours 'studying' in a noisy room with their phone on the desk is retaining almost nothing. Meanwhile a student doing 60 focused minutes in the right environment walks away having actually learned something.

A few small things that genuinely make a difference:
🔹 Phone in another room — not just on silent
🔹 A consistent time and place — habit builds focus
🔹 Starting with the hardest subject first, not the easiest
🔹 Actual breaks — not scroll breaks

Small changes. Real results. And it's one of the first things we'll go through together.

I’ve just spent two fabulous days at the Te Awamutu hub, getting a vision of what Hawke’s Bay will soon look like. Thanks to Jean, Narelle and Erin for their generosity in sharing their experience and knowledge.

Year 11 is the biggest academic shift most NZ students face — and nobody prepares them for it.

Year 11 is when everything changes.

Suddenly, everything counts. Multiple internals. Multiple subjects. A new way of being assessed. And the constant background hum of 'this goes on your record.'

Most students arrive at Year 11 having been told what NCEA is — but with no real idea how to navigate it. How to read what a marking schedule actually wants. How to manage five subjects with five separate deadline cycles. How to ask for help without feeling like they're falling behind.

The students who fly through Year 11 usually had one of three things: a really switched-on teacher, an older sibling who'd been through it, or a tutor.

Hawke's Bay has brilliant schools. I know — I taught in them.

One of the things that matters most when choosing a tutor is whether they actually understand the context your child is in.

I know the Hawke's Bay school landscape. Napier Girls', Hastings Boys', Taradale High, Sacred Heart, Tamatea, Havelock North High. I know how they approach NCEA, what the pressure points are at each year level, and what a Year 10 student at each of these schools is navigating right now.

After a bit of moving around last term to find the right fit, we're settled and here to stay.

To celebrate, Jo is offering Walk-in Wednesdays. Every Wednesday from 4pm, pop into the hub for a chat with Jo — no appointment, no commitment, just a korero.
It's a chance to talk about your child and where they're at, share any concerns, and think through some options together. Jo will walk through their learning journey with you and how she can support them (and you!) going forward.

I spent years in the classroom. Here's what teachers notice — that parents rarely hear about…

There's a type of student I saw every year in the classroom — and never was able to properly reach.

They weren't disruptive. They weren't failing. They were quietly, politely, invisibly lost.

They'd nod when you explained something. Write down what was on the board. Submit assignments that were just good enough. And arrive at exam time with a massive gap between what they'd written down and what they actually understood.

These students aren't struggling because they're not bright. They're people-pleasers who've learned to perform 'getting it' rather than ask for help.

Impact Tutoring changes this entirely. When it's just one tutor and one or two students, there's nowhere to hide — and suddenly it's safe to say 'I actually don't understand this.'

Week 1 of Term 3. And for Year 11, 12, and 13 students — this term is where results are made or lost.

NCEA internals are in full swing. The CAA Literacy and Numeracy window opens in September. End-of-year external exams are now less than 16 weeks away.

The students who finish this year strongly aren't always the most academic. They're the ones who got the right support at the right time — and kept showing up.

If your family hasn't got a tutor in place and has been thinking about it — this week is the week to reach out. Not next month.
