Our Senior and Year 9 Outdoor Education students have been working hard on their riding and bike-handling skills over the past few weeks. As the lessons have progressed, so have the challenges.

Students started with the fundamentals of gear changes and braking before advancing to the "attack position" and navigating tight cornering. Seeing the steady improvement and rise in student confidence across all skill levels has been fantastic.

The pump track has proven to be an invaluable teaching resource. Watching students push themselves to build speed and link turns effectively highlights just how much they learn through practical experience. Beyond the physical side of riding - such as balance, fitness, and applying concepts like centripetal force and force simulation (not that they knew they were doing these last 2 - they are developing critical personal skills:
- Confidence and Trust: Pushing past hesitation and trusting their equipment and abilities.
- Risk Management: Learning to read the track, make quick decisions, and assess risk safely.
- Leadership and Encouragement: Our more experienced riders have naturally stepped up to mentor and support their classmates, building a great team atmosphere.

These personal growth outcomes translate directly back into the classroom and broader school life.

Great work to all our ODE students for their effort, focus, and support for one another throughout the unit!

Five of our senior students have been fortunate enough to be working through the basics of fencing with local fencer, Paul Sara. This will help them in gaining a number of credits to go towards their Level 2 NCEA. Hopefully, we will be now able to enter a team in the South Island Secondary Schools Fencing Competition in 2027. Thanks Paul, our students are having a great time and really appreciate what you are teaching them!

What a fantastic day we had on Friday for our Book Week Character Dress-up Day! There were some very creative costumes, and it was great to see so many people get involved. We particularly loved seeing how many accidental costume pairings there were across the school. We also had some incredible 10-word stories, re-imagined book covers and photos of reading in creative places.

Kea Roadshow
Yesterday, our junior school students had an exciting visit from the Kea Roadshow!
The tamariki had a fantastic time learning all about New Zealand's famously cheeky and highly intelligent alpine parrot. Through fun, interactive activities, they discovered how kea adapt to their environments, the challenges these unique birds face, and how we can all help protect them.
A huge thank you to the Kea Conservation Trust for such an inspiring, hands-on learning experience! ๐Ÿ’š

Today, as part of Book Week, we celebrate Lois - who has been our incredible librarian for 30 years! What a fantastic achievement for an absolute taonga to our school. 'The Hobbit' was chosen for her celebration cake, as it was the first book she read and sparked her love of reading. Thank you, Lois, for all you do to inspire a love of reading in our tamariki!

Billets required - ONE night only - Thursday 29 October.
M.A.S is hosting Junior (Years 7-10) TOSI next term. This is a 2 day sporting event featuring Tapawera, Collingwood and Amuri Area Schools, as well as Murchison.
In order to keep this cost effective we are committed to hosting our visitors.
While we realise it is still a little way out from the end of October, in the interests of best practice we are now required to police vet any families taking billets. This process takes up to 5 weeks.
Hence, we need to get this process in place immediately. If you are able to help us out here, could you please contact Peter Grigg and advise how many billets you can take and what gender please. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.
