Good news for Christmas. It was unbelievable that it was even considered.
At the final meeting for the year of the Early Childhood Advisory Committee (ECAC) last week, Education Minister Erica Stanford made a public commitment that New Zealand's world-leading ECE curriculum Te Whāriki “would not be touched” under her leadership.
This is a huge relief, after months of rumours about a private lobbying campaign to remove important cultural elements relating to te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi and change the curriculum’s substance and intent.
It's also a testament to every early childhood kaiako and kaimahi, parent or whānau member, and community supporter, who, during the year, has stood up for Te Tiriti, written to the Minister about Te Whāriki, and lobbied MPs to protect high-quality ECE for all tamariki!

Today the children welcomed Whaea Stacey from Mount Primary School. Whaea Stacey has been the lead kaiako for Kahui Ako for cultural and identity. We wanted to acknowledge this amazing wahine for all the work and support she has given us over the years. Unfortunately, the Kahui Ako initiative has ended and we will no longer have Whaea Stacey as our guide. However we will continue to provide a curriculum that honours her work and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Ngā mihi nui Whaea Stacey.

What an action packed morning. It started with a visit from
Sarah, the educator from Hato Hone, St. John ambulance service where children got to hear what happens in an ambulance. The next agenda was a visit our local tatahi where children found treasure and sadly rubbish. Beach trips are now fortnightly for the 10 eldest children. Meanwhile our youngest enjoy a chilled and spacious environment. 🙌🙌🙌
