Let's look at some key areas of development that are being overcomplicated by gimmicks and great marketing! 👀

Cause & Effect 🥁
Yes, flashing, noisy toys teach children that "when I press this, that happens."

But so does splashing in a puddle.
Throwing a stone into water.
Pushing a swing.
Turning on the tap.
Banging a wooden spoon on a pot.
Cracking an egg.

Real life is packed with opportunities to discover "If I do this... then this happens."

Sensory Play 🐚
Gimmicky sensory toys are exciting... but nature has been doing it for free forever.

Squishing mud between fingers.
Squeezing juicy citrus.
Digging in the herb garden.
Playing with water.

Different textures, temperatures, smells and sounds all help children make sense of the world around them.

Speech & Language 🗯
Absolutely, 'educational' videos are handy when you need a moment to do the dishes...

But nothing beats you.

Reading together.
Singing in the car.
Talking while you fold the washing.
Naming what you can see on your walk.
Playing rhyming games together.

Language grows through connection with real people in the real world.

So before you add another toy to the cart remember that learning and play isn't driven by what you find in the toy aisle... it's found in muddy puddles, kitchen benches, and bedtime stories 🐌

As adults, we’re often focused on the outcome.
The finished product.
The masterpiece.

But tamariki are rarely thinking that way.

They’re immersed in the joy of the process. The squeezing, mixing, balancing, pouring, building, painting, testing, knocking it down, and starting again. The learning isn’t waiting at the end, it’s happening.

As kaiako and whānau, we often (with the very best intentions) interrupt that process by asking, “What are you making?”
It’s a natural question. We’re excited to understand their thinking and eager to see their vision come to life.
But what if there isn’t a vision? What if today’s masterpiece is simply the experience itself?
When we shift our focus from the product to the process, we begin to notice what really matters: the persistence, the creativity, the problem-solving, the curiosity, the experimentation, and the pure delight of discovering what happens next.

The product may never make it home.
It might be pulled apart, painted over, squashed into something entirely different, or left unfinished.
And that’s okay.

Because the value was never in what they made.
It was in the making. 💛

Childhood was never meant to be spent sitting down.

From Stephanie Bennett & Lyndsey Hellyn: "The landmark Glasgow Pre-School Activity Study used wearable motion trackers to measure actual movement in standard early years settings.

The findings were staggering: children spend 75% to 79% of their day completely sedentary.

That breaks down to exactly 45 minutes out of every single hour spent sitting still."

This is scary stuff! 🤯 Let's all make an effort to get outside and moving with our whānau over the long weekend (this is also a reminder that we are closed tomorrow for Matariki 😉).
