Tautoru A Ngāti Hinerangi led programme facilitating tailored kaupapa Māori education for ākonga needing extra support to re-engage with kura in Matamata.

It’s been hectic for us leading up to the holidays but in the BEST way!!!

We’ve spent the past couple weeks learning maurakau, rāranga and whakairo, having a mean time!

We’ve even been out to do some riparian planting at one of our marae, a wicked opportunity to learn about tree species and their special superpowers that help our taiao flourish.

Checking possum traps was a pretty cool way to spend the day, too. A bit of science, a lot of bravery as we retrieved some pests threatening our ngahere and manu.

Tautoru is all about using the best of what te ao Māori has to offer to help rangatahi unlock their potential. We help them explore what makes them special and man, the joy we feel watching our rangatahi thrive is unbeatable!!!

Big love to the amazing facilitators and ringawera of all our wānanga, our whānau who came along with us and our rangatahi who gave it all a go 😍

The ‘classroom’ set up at Tautoru hits different with various learning spaces so we can change things up as it suits.

We may wānanga on the couches, practice our manaakitanga in the kitchen and sit up to the tables and whiteboard when we’ve got some formal learning to do.

We have a computer suite for research mahi, table tennis when we need to let off some steam and a native tree nursery right at our fingertips out back if we need some of that taiao love.

We even have a private couch room if anyone ever needs some quiet time or a side hui.

Our ako sessions last no longer than 30mins to ensure we stay engaged and activated. Snacks are a plenty, music too and the door is always open to whānau and manuhiri wanting to tautoko.

What’s beautiful about Tautoru is the partnership we have with Matamata College. Our tauira are still very much their tauira too so we work together to make sure the door between us swings both ways.

Tautoru is a stepping stone. Either a way to get back to kura reinvigorated, onto alternative pathways to study or straight into mahi, providing our ākonga are old enough.

It may not be everyone’s perfect fit but it has been a success for many with attendance, engagement, connection to whakapapa and self-esteem improved 🥰

Our classroom was the taiao today and what a day for it! Tamanuiterā turned it on! 🌞

Our rangatahi did a morning of wetland planting 🌱 on a farm in Ōkauia today with the guidance of our whānaunga at Wairere Mahi.

We learned about the impact this planting has on the protection of our taiao. 🌿🐝🌈

We learned about new tree species and the importance of mahi tahi, working as a team! 💪🏾

First week back at course and we had some Manuhiri come in and join our Tautoru whānau. They shared some amazing kōrero with our rangatahi, inspiring and educating them on LIFE and how LIFE was for them. Beautiful connections and some really cool open kōrero. Big shout out to our panel! We'd just like to take a moment to thank Matamata Piako District Council's Pride of Place initiative, that has helped us fund our special open day coming up this Friday afternoon.

We're so excited to open the doors to whānau, community and other agencies to come down and see what we do and how we support rangatahi.

Pride of Place is all about creating opportunities for positive impact in our communities and so are we!
