This term, Room 2 and Room 11 have been exploring Alan Gratz’s powerful novel Refugee, following the journeys of Josef, Mahmoud and Isabel. The story has sparked rich conversations about culture, identity, belonging and understanding the experiences of others.

To bring our learning to life, one of our wonderful Room 2 students brought in abaya, burka and hijab, giving students the opportunity to explore these items and, if they wished, try them on.

Our teachers were also able to share their own connections to the Middle East. Having lived in the Middle East, Mrs Hepburn was able to bring in her dad’s Omani dishdasha, kumma and musr, while Mr O, who has lived in the UAE, brought in his kandura, ghutra and agal. Several students were excited to have the opportunity to try them on.

Students were fascinated to learn about the cultural significance of these different items of clothing, and the experience led to some wonderful conversations and increased awareness and understanding in our classrooms.

It has been a rich learning experience and a great example of how we can connect with and better understand the wider world through literacy.

The images shared in this post have been published with the permission of the students involved.

The last digital technology lesson for the year for this pod. They have been working on a Game Design unit covering several different applications. Today they could choose which one to finish on. Options included Bitsbox, which is simplified Javascriot, MakeCode arcade, Minecraft, Scratch and Spheros. There were lots of iterations, debugging, frustration and laughing.

Today we had two teams, Shark Girls & Water Boys compete in the regional Aquabots competition.
We experienced successful moments and some robotic fail moments but they all worked together and demonstrated great teamwork!
The water boys placed third so they’re now invited to the nationals being held late November in Blenheim!

Our Poly group had a great afternoon of combined learning with students from the Rathkeale and St Matts Ngātahi rōpu. It was wonderful to see some former students return and see them continuing on with cultural journey. Ka mau te wehi!

All Matharapa results will be shared once we have them. Unfortunately we couldn’t wait for the Year 8 prizegiving as some children needed to return to catch after school buses.
