Kumon is a home-based learning method which is effective because of the partnership between parents, Instructor and the student.
In this video, the student is reading aloud to his Mum so she can listen to his fluency and expression. This gives the student’s Mum the opportunity to guide him by saying, “Try that one again.” This interaction gives the student confidence to keep going and prevents mistakes from becoming a habit.

Kumon Maths and English are flexible, pencil-and-paper programmes.
As Alina is demonstrating in this photo, Kumon students can take their worksheets anywhere. They can pick up a pencil, read, think, write, and use an eraser to correct their errors. Chen, Alina’s mum, says through study of the Kumon worksheets, division is now easy for Alina and that her English comprehension ability has also improved.

The Kumon Method of Learning was born from one father’s love for his child in 1954. Toru Kumon, a caring father and gifted high school maths teacher, saw that his son Takeshi was not excelling in maths at school. To help him improve he wrote out maths worksheets for his son to complete daily. Toru Kumon believed that educators have a responsibility to foster a mindset of self-learning in children, so he created learning materials for Takeshi that encouraged him to work independently.
