Skills L.A.B

At Skills4Work the highest priority is to prepare our students for the world of work and support them towards future success.

We do this though hands on learning using the medium of “Project Based Learning” in Butchery and Bakery. The Skills Lab project is an incredible initiative designed to teach students how to start and run their own small business, encouraging their entrepreneurial skills. This hands-on experience guides learners through every step of building a business from scratch.

Students develop a business idea, create a mini business plan, and explore key aspects such as sales, marketing, and overhead costs. They then pitch their ideas to our management team to secure seed funding. The programme culminates in a trading day, where students sell their products. After covering all costs, the proceeds are donated to a charity of their choice.

While not a competition, we are proud to acknowledge that our trainer Bruce Castle’s class based in Whangarei raised an impressive $816, which was generously donated to Te Puna O Te Aroha (Women’s Refuge). The group who called themselves “Mighty Meats” designed a 2025 calendar highlighting some of their favourite recipes accompanied by photos of them learning the butchery trade.

This initiative not only equips students with valuable business skills but also teaches them the importance of giving back to the community.

In late 2023, Skills4Work Limited became the first tertiary education organisation to achieve the Dyslexia-Friendly Quality Mark (DFQM) and have their first cohort of staff achieve the Tapatoru Ako Professional Practice Award.

Congratulations to Skills4Work on this significant achievement and for setting a powerful example as an organisation who prioritises inclusive learning environments. 🤝

Welcome to the 2024 Butchers’ Summit Speaker round-up!

Many people know JK as a sporting legend, but did you know he trained to be a butcher? After leaving school at the age of 15, JK started his butcher apprenticeship, working with his father in a butcher shop, in Onehunga.

The former All Black and 1987 Rugby World Cup winner became a “Sir” in 2012, joining a list that includes other well-known former All Blacks. However, unlike his fellow All Blacks, Kirwan was recognised as much, if not more, for his contribution outside of rugby; for services to mental health, having been for several years at the forefront of the campaign to heighten public awareness of depression, an illness he has suffered from himself.

We are thrilled to announce Sir John Kirwan as our Keynote Speaker at this year’s Butchers’ Summit, Eden Park on the 9th & 10th of May.

Early Bird tickets are on sale now, save yourself $50 by registering before Monday 25 March!
