Last school Ooshie swap day - this Friday in Ruru Room.
I know some children still have just a few to collect to finish their sets and with no more available from Woolworths this may be their only chance to do so. If your child needs certain ones please send a list with them so I can help them find the ones they need. If your child has completed their set and you have spares please also feel free to send to school in a named plastic bag and I’m happy to help out children who may need one of your family spares even if your child doesn’t need to attend the swap. I would return any left overs if required or have on to teachers for class prizes if you don’t want them back.
**Reminder - no other swaps to happen at school. Thanks.

Assembly this week…. Congratulations to our Student of the Week award recipients from weeks 5 and 6. This week our items were presented by Pukeko and Ruru Rooms. Pukeko Room shared some of their fantastic descriptive writing about a roller coaster. Ruru Room performed a play to us. We also presented the last Year 8 leavers hoodie and certificates for our winning Year 5-6 football team. Have a good weekend everyone!

Enviroschools this week…
- Today the gardeners planted some white raspberries but it was too wet for anything else - maybe we should try hydroponics.
We wandered around and identified 3 possible places for a butterfly garden.
We still have flax and pittosporum for sale if anyone wants some.
- The cooking group made scones for the whole school.
- The Action Group completed the thank you cards for those who helped with our musical production.
- The Community group joined our little buddies at Kindy for some reading and play, then returned to school to work on their Kowhaiwhai panels for our Pataka Kai ( Community pantry).
- The junior Envirogroup did some experiments and investigating about different kinds of paper - from baking paper to magazine paper to toilet paper! We found out if we could fold, rip, cut or write on them and dropped water on to see if they would absorb it. Next we started the first step of recycling our own paper. - we ripped up some paper offcuts ready to make pulp! We are on the lookout for some thick non-bendy sheets of card that we can dry our paper on if anyone has some?
Another great week of hands on learning!

HEALTH INFORMATION FOR NZ

Online GP care now free for all under-14s

With lots of winter illnesses about right now, health services are experiencing very high demand. If you need to speak to a GP and can’t get in to your usual doctor or its after hours, Online GP provides a great option for accessing safe and quick care. The service is available from anywhere in the country, anytime day or night, and is now free for all under-14s.

Appointments usually take place through a video app or a phone call, and the service can prescribe medicine and send prescriptions to your nearest pharmacy.

It also provides another care option for rural communities, reducing the need to travel.

Enviroschools today…
- The Cooking group made Afghans, ginger crisps and Santa's buttons biscuits as a thank you to Ardgowan school for the use of their staging 🙂🥰.
- The Gardening Group had a lovely day in the garden today. The planter boxes were pruned and weeded. We planted seeds - having a greenhouse means we can get them in much earlier! The labels look very artistic!
- The Action Group shelled our dry walnuts with hammers on the court. These were from our own tree here at school and we have been drying them. The Cooking Group will use them in their baking. We also brainstormed some ideas about waste minimisation for at school after watching some short videos on recycling ♻️.
- The Community Group thought about creating and decorating a Pataka Kai ( Community Pantry). They researched some patterns used in Kowhaiwhai panels and started to make their own. This will be an ongoing project for the next few weeks.
- The Junior Envirogroup tipped out Kea Room’s rubbish bin! We found that there were a few wrappers, tissues, a dried-up glue stick, a raisin and lots of off cuts of paper. We looked at which things could be reused or recycled. We looked at all the paper and began thinking about ways we could reduce, reuse and recycle it. With the assistance of our helpers we shared what we knew about paper. Next we read a book called One Little Bag - it was an interesting book because the drawings were all black and white except for the little brown bag but, more importantly, the book had NO WORDS! We had to read the pictures! We finished off watching an episode of The Moe Show where MOE goes to the paper mill. Over the next few weeks we will be reusing and recycling paper.
- The last few photos are from Golden Time in Pukeko room - dress ups, loom bands, Lego, and creations with boxes. Some awesome robots today, and a cat house!

What a great day of hands on learning! Have a good weekend everyone!

On Monday Constable Jay Morriss came to talk to each class about bus safety. Please reiterate these messages to your children - especially if they are bus kids.
- Wear your hi-vis vest while getting on and off bus. Be safe, be seen.
- Be sensible when waiting by roads for the bus.
- Wait for the bus to move away and you can see both ways before crossing the road. This is very important. It is great if adults can wait on the same side of the road as the bus stop so that children are not in a hurry to cross.
-Never walk in front of the bus as the driver can't see you.
- When on the bus wear a seat belt if the bus has one.
- Don't distract the driver - quiet voices and sensible behavior expected.
- Bags to be by feet or under seat - never block the aisle.
- sit forward facing with feet on floor.
-Shoes on and stay on when on the bus.
