As we move further into Term 1, we are beginning to see some students’ absences adding up. Northern Southland College would like to remind families about the Ministry of Education’s Stepped Attendance Response, which all schools in New Zealand are required to follow.

We also recognise that some absence from school is unavoidable. Illness, family circumstances, and other commitments can occasionally mean students need to miss school, and we understand that it can be difficult to avoid missing some days.

As part of this process, families will receive a notification letter when a student reaches the following levels of absence within a single term (including justified absences):

• 5 days absent
• 10 days absent
• 15 days absent
• Over 15 days absent

These letters are part of a required system designed to help schools and families work together to support regular attendance. Our shared goal is to ensure every student has the best possible opportunity to learn, participate, and succeed at school.

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance, or if there are circumstances affecting their ability to attend regularly, please get in touch with the school. We are here to support you and your child.

Assembly 16 March 2026 Lots of student achievements were celebrated today. The students are encouraged to pop these into the achievements book in the library. We congratulated those who did well at Southland as well as a driving success and a strong man competition. The Seniors are showing the juniors that it's good to celebrate these things.
Krisca Gould, the Volunteer Development Manager from AFS talked to us about the opportunities available through AFS. Samantha Kington (a recent ex student) did a 10 month exchange to France over 2024 and 2025. There is an information evening in Invercargill this week.
Our Senior PB4L team, Jesse and Riley rewarded students for gaining respect card milestones: Base Badge (25) Grace and Kolby, Bronze bar (50) Abbie, Cyan and Marley, Silver bar (75) Christine, Gold bar (100) Slade, Heath and Rosy. Plus two rewards for over 100 cards : MJ - get out of SSR with 3 friends (175) and Casey - one day non-uniform (200)
Mr Wilkinson talked about resolving conflict peacefully and reminded the students that we are part of a community and how giving back to our communities is good for us.
Mrs Elder wished the students heading to Southland Primary Athletics this weekend lots of luck and encouraged the year 7&8 swimmers to sign up for Northern Swimming Sports

Marnie Clark is currently shooting at the Worlds Women’s Open Clay Target Competition in Mcleans Island ChCh.

“It’s been an awesome chance to compete at this level & shoot alongside some of the world's best. There have been some good rounds & a few missed targets that I should have hit. Overall it's going fairly well .”

Good luck Marnie!
