This term we have been learning about the Matariki constellation. Using prior knowledge of ngā atua and linking this with the whetū of Matariki, tamariki were able to fortify their understanding of these concepts. Tamariki who went on this learning haerenga last year were able to take on a tuakana role and teach other tamariki their knowledge; supporting tuakana/teina relationships and each tamaiti having a sense of responsibility for their own learning.
As we have learned more, weaving teachings about the natural world, prior learning, and of course lots of stories, we have prepared for our Matariki celebration evening. Tamariki have learned kai skills, from peeling vegetables to kneading dough; this was in preparation for making vegetable soup for our evening together. Ngā mihi to our whānau for contributing vegetables to make this possible. Tamariki also learned a waiata Matariki to sing and got to lead their kindergarten community in karakia before enjoying the soup! Ka rawe tōu mahi tamariki mā!
Maea ake ki runga, Matariki! Maea ake ki runga, Puanga! Hurahia rā ngā tohu o te tau! Nau mai, e ngā hua o te tau hou!
