Nettie Riley Kindergarten

Nettie Riley Kindergarten This kindergarten located on Witako Street in central Lower Hutt offers an all-day (7.30am to 5pm), all year service for 2-5 year olds.

This is a great option for families who want the kindergarten teaching philosophy and require a longer day service. The Kindergarten is on the ground level of the newly built Hutt Valley Heath Hub with a spacious outdoor area that wraps around the building. This provides a variety of spaces for tamariki to explore, learn and play. Including a sandpit, gardens, climbing equipment, swings and more.

Inside the Kindergarten tamariki will discover a range of activities and natural resources in a modern setting. This spacious area also features a dedicated sleep room for tamariki who need to nap during the day. We are dedicated to providing the best education for tamariki with a 100% qualified and experienced teaching team. As an all year service, this Kindergarten will remain open during the term breaks, with a two week closure period over Christmas / New Year and on public holidays. Nettie Riley Kindergarten is part of Hutt City Kindergartens and joins the 20 Kindergartens under our Association located across the Hutt valley.

This term we have been learning about the Matariki constellation. Using prior knowledge of ngā atua and linking this with the whetū of Matariki, tamariki were able to fortify their understanding of these concepts. Tamariki who went on this learning haerenga last year were able to take on a tuakana role and teach other tamariki their knowledge; supporting tuakana/teina relationships and each tamaiti having a sense of responsibility for their own learning.

As we have learned more, weaving teachings about the natural world, prior learning, and of course lots of stories, we have prepared for our Matariki celebration evening. Tamariki have learned kai skills, from peeling vegetables to kneading dough; this was in preparation for making vegetable soup for our evening together. Ngā mihi to our whānau for contributing vegetables to make this possible. Tamariki also learned a waiata Matariki to sing and got to lead their kindergarten community in karakia before enjoying the soup! Ka rawe tōu mahi tamariki mā!

Maea ake ki runga, Matariki! Maea ake ki runga, Puanga! Hurahia rā ngā tohu o te tau! Nau mai, e ngā hua o te tau hou!

Manaakitanga and mahi tahi in action with Nettie Riley Kindergarten 🌿🌊

Last weekend, Nettie Riley Kindergarten kaiako brought tamariki, whānau, and the wider community together for a beach clean-up. Living out their values as kaitiaki of the whenua.

From grandparents to friends, the turnout was incredible! This mahi is about more than picking up rubbish. It’s about strengthening relationships, showing whakaute (respect) for our whenua (land), and taking the kindergarten’s philosophy beyond the gates and into the heart of the community. 💚

Ka mau te wehi, whānau! You are amazing!

We have a vacancy available at Nettie Riley Kindergarten!

We are looking for an Assistant Teacher who will add their energy and enthusiasm to our existing team. The position does not require any formal teaching qualification, but previous experience working with preschool children will be a big advantage.

Our Assistant Teachers work closely with tamariki, assist the Teachers with the learning programme, build positive working relationships with whānau, prepare resources and complete some housekeeping duties.

The day is spent engaging with children, so you won't be doing any paperwork or assessments. This is a stimulating role where there is constant interaction with tamariki, staff and whānau.

To be successful at Nettie Riley, you will need:
• the willingness to learn and develop your natural ability to engage with children
• to be available to work between 7.30am and 5pm if required
• to have passion for supporting our tamariki and whānau
• lots of empathy, tolerance and patience
• to be a flexible team player, with a "can do" attitude and a proactive mindset
• a great sense of humour!

Working at Nettie Riley Kindergarten will allow you to:
• take most of your 4 weeks’ annual leave at times that suit you
• experience regular high-quality professional development opportunities
• enjoy free, all-day off-street parking.

During te wiki o te reo Māori, we made a plan to create our own kindergarten korowai. Many of you would know that this was a process that involved many hands to create and there was a lot of learning for our tamariki that was made during the week. Tamariki learnt about the harakeke plant (flax), how to do karakia before harvesting, which parts of the plant can be cut and which parts can’t (e.g. the pepe and matua), and how to handle it with whakaute.

Through consultation with whānau, the finishing touches were added and our first rōpū of tamariki venturing off to school got to use it last week. Over the coming week, we will be working to display this up on our kindergarten wall for everyone to see and appreciate. This taonga was made with aroha and we look forward to using it to pass on the best wishes and aroha to all tamariki as they leave our kindergarten.

During the lead up to celebrating Matariki we have enjoyed tending to our māra kai, baking and cooking, and sharing an enjoyable evening with our whānau here at Nettie Riley Kindergarten. We continue to learn and explore the whetū of Matariki, what they represent and link to within te taiao (the natural world); provoking wonderful conversations about whetū, marama, and their stories. How have you celebrated Matariki in your whānau?
