Yesterday we had a fantastic waste audit session with Alicia from Enviroschools, learning all about waste disposal and what goes where.

Together, we discovered that a lot of what we thought was rubbish doesn’t actually need to go to landfill. We found that many of our wrappers and paper towels can be recycled, while other plastics can be reused for art, carpentry and creative projects.

We were excited to discover that only a small amount of our waste needs to go to landfill! This was a great opportunity for tamariki to think about how our everyday choices can make a difference and how we can work together to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Today we began our Onam celebrations by learning a little more about this special festival and the traditions that are important to some of our whānau.

We are so lucky to have whānau within our centre who celebrate Onam and each year we love the opportunity to learn from and celebrate alongside them. It is one of the ways we embrace and value the many cultures and traditions that make our centre community so special.

Today our tamariki got creative making their very own tiger masks, inspired by the traditional Pulikali tiger dance associated with Onam. 🐅
We also explored Pookalam patterns, beautiful floral designs traditionally created as part of Onam celebrations and began designing their own colourful creations.

We enjoyed listening and dancing along to some Malayalam music, bringing plenty of movement and fun into our learning!

And this is just the beginning! Our Onam celebrations will continue throughout the week as we explore more of the traditions, including Vallam Kali (traditional boat racing), Onam-inspired games, music, movement and other creative experiences.

A big thank you to our whānau for sharing their culture, traditions and celebrations with us.

Our tamariki have been busy getting creative for Daffodil Day this Friday, with each room putting their own special spin on daffodil-inspired artwork.

From collages and handprint art to paint roller creations, our centre is now filled with beautiful bursts of yellow, with the tamariki’s mahi proudly displayed around the centre for whānau to enjoy.

It has been wonderful seeing the different ways our tamariki have explored colour, texture and creativity while creating something meaningful for an important cause.

If whānau would like to purchase this art work and support the Cancer Society, donations of any amount are warmly welcomed. All donations collected by our centre will be passed on to the Cancer Society.

We are so proud of the beautiful creations our tamariki have made.

Happy Retirement, Eric! 🚛

Today we celebrated the retirement of our favourite rubbish truck driver, Eric from Kiwi Bins Horowhenua

Wednesday mornings just won’t be the same without Eric arriving up the drive and our tamariki eagerly waiting for their favourite part, the toot! It’s safe to say Eric has become a very special part of our Wednesdays, and we’ve loved seeing the excitement on the children’s faces each week.

Today we celebrated Eric in true Eric style, wearing our high-vis, just like he always does! 🦺

Eric, thank you for all the smiles, waves and t***s over the years. We wish you all the very best for your next adventure. You’ve certainly earned the chance to put those feet up, relax, and enjoy a well-deserved retirement!

Our tamariki have been having so much fun exploring our dress-up collection! From racecar drivers and superheroes to princesses, builders, fire fighters and everything in between, dress-ups provide endless opportunities for imaginative play.

Through role play, tamariki can explore different ideas, express themselves, build confidence, develop language and social skills and let their imaginations lead the way.

Our little science experiment had us all guessing this week!
We popped some water and animals outside overnight hoping for a freeze… but the first night didn’t quite go to plan so of course, we tried again!
With temperatures dropping to -3 overnight, we came in this morning to a big success, frozen solid water and animals ready for exploration!
Tmariki were so excited to see the difference and get hands-on exploring the ice, chatting about what changed and why. Such a great way to experience cause and effect, sometimes things don’t work the first time, but trying again can lead to a whole new discovery.
We love these simple moments of curiosity, problem-solving and learning together !

A chilly little experiment is underway tonight!
We’ve left out pots and pans filled with water and animals to see what happens when the temperature drops to 0° overnight… will they freeze solid?

Tomorrow we’ll be investigating, questioning and making sense of what we see, growing our curiosity and developing working theories about the world around us.

Technology in our ECE doesn’t always mean screens.

In our space, our new counting machines offer a kind of screen-free technology, where tamariki can press buttons and see cause and effect in action.
Alongside this, wooden blocks with printed “screens” become laptops and phones, supporting children to recreate the moments they see at home.

These playful experiences help bridge home and centre, building understanding in ways that are familiar, hands-on and meaningful.
