I’ve just had this memory pop up from 8 years ago 🌈

At the entrance to Ruru House rests our mauri stone — a quiet yet powerful presence that anchors all who arrive.

Carefully chosen from our local awa, the Waiongana, this stone was selected not by sight alone, but by feeling — drawn to it in a way that spoke to the vision of Ruru. Heart-shaped in form, it reflects how we choose to lead: with care, compassion, and intention. A gentle dip within the stone, almost as if shaped by hand, felt symbolic — a reminder that while nature holds us, we too shape and are shaped by the journey.

The stone was blessed to hold and represent the mauri — the life force and essence — not only of the building, but of the important work that unfolds within it. It acknowledges our deep connection to the whenua and the responsibility we carry as kaitiaki of this space, and of the tamariki and whānau who pass through.

Last week we were gifted a beautify thoughtful gift on Leo’s last day. This historic aerial image from 1950, a snapshot of the past — the curves of the awa, the shaping of the land, the stories held long before us — felt incredibly timely. It reminds us that Ruru is not just a place in the present, but part of a much longer story.

In te ao Māori, it is understood that the mauri of a place — of a forest, a tree, or a waterway — can be held and protected within a stone or taonga. Our mauri stone stands as a guardian at our gateway, while this image anchors us to what came before.

Together, they remind us of our role as kaitiaki — to honour the past, to be deeply present in our work today, and to care for this place so it may continue to hold life and learning for generations to come.

My favourite time of year ☀️

Harvesting the spray free grapes 🤤

It’s a battle with the birds to get them to this stage, but worth it to taste the real flavour 👌🏻

And being able to share them with our community 💚 even better!

Harvesting the gifts of nature 🍑🌱

After 7 years, the fruit are well and truly providing our tamariki with the opportunity to slow down, explore, harvest, and connect with the natural world around them.

From little hands gathering fruit to curious conversations under the trees, these moments are part of how children learn where food comes from, how seasons change, and how to care for the environment that sustains us.

These excursions are a treasured part of our days — learning through real experiences, fresh air, and the generosity of nature 💚

✨ Christmas at Ruru House 2025 ✨
Every year, something a little bit magical happens at Ruru…
While the children are fast asleep at home, our very own Christmas Elves (also known as the incredible Ruru teaching team) come together after hours to transform the centre into a place filled with sparkle, wonder, and the true spirit of Christmas. 🎄💫

We don’t decorate just for the sake of Christmas cheer.
We do it because we believe in creating moments of magic.
Moments where children feel joy, belonging, surprise, and that sense of something special that childhood should be filled with.
To infuse Ruru with the warmth, joy, and heart of what Christmas is truly intended to be — connection, kindness, imagination, and moments of pure delight ❤️

The children have no idea when they leave.
And the next morning… the reactions say it all.
Wide eyes. Gasps. Big smiles. Literally screams of delight! Little voices whispering “WOW!” It is honestly the most rewarding part of our year and the reason we pour so much love into this night ✨

From nativity scenes and sparkling wreaths, to elves, dinosaurs dressed for Christmas, window art, lights, colours, and magical corners everywhere, not to mention a custom made ginger bread hiuse! Every detail is done with intention and heart. ❤️

Thank you for sharing your beautiful children with us — creating moments like this is such a privilege, and we cannot wait to watch the joy unfold over the coming days.
