These rituals are set up with real purpose to allow the children to have a sense of rhythm to their day, creating beautiful, calm connections with one another and their kaiako.

Lunch time at Heart and Soul is more than just filling tummies; it's a time to fuel our wairua and ensure our tamariki feel seen, heard and celebrated, deepening their sense of well-being as a whole, and allowing for beautiful, magical, fantastical, wonderful, transcendent play. Which is the highest form of learning.

Koru room (0-2yrs) lunch time rituals support communication development, turn taking, and independence.

Kowhai room (2-3.5yrs) lunch time rituals support independence, self-care, communication, helping others, decision making, fine motor skills, listening and following instructions.

Kauri room (3.5-5yrs) lunch time rituals support leadership, self confidence, independence, social skills, and self care.

Does your whanau have any rituals that bring more beauty and presence to ordinary moments? Let us know in the comments!

The magic of loose parts; it's the epitome of the old saying, "One man's trash is another man's treasure!"

It may look like junk or random stuff to some, but to the tamariki and kaiako here at Heart and Soul, it is TREASURE!

This type of play provides opportunities for children to lead their play and take ownership over their learning. They are free to take risks, test theories, collaborate and change direction as their thinking develops. They can create and design entirely on their own; there is no "right" way to use the materials. The things they come up with are truly amazing!

Outside, we have items such as cones, crates, pipes, hoses, tyres, steering wheels, large reels, car parts and more.
Inside, we have random wooden blocks, jar lids, bottle lids, small reels, small ice block sticks, material, corks, bamboo vases, plastic pipes and connections and more.

If you have any, or know of anyone who has any, or know where we can source any loose parts that might suit us, please let us know, as we would very likely LOVE to take them off your hands!

Also, a quick reminder: we have a few spaces available now and are also currently enrolling for 2027.

Welcome to our Kowhai Room! A warm, welcoming world designed especially for our 2–3.5-year-olds. This thoughtfully laid-out space invites little ones to explore, imagine, and learn through play. Inside, you’ll find a large, open room with multiple, meaningful play areas. Our special “waving window” makes drop-offs gentler, helping children feel safe and connected as they transition into their day. Outdoors, tamariki can enjoy a huge, shared area with older children, opening the door to endless exploration. Kowhai Room is a place where curiosity is celebrated every day.

Welcome to Koru Room! a gentle beginning for our tiniest explorers, 12 weeks to 2 years old.

Here, our highly qualified, long-standing teachers create a safe, nurturing space where your little one can grow, discover and feel truly seen. With spacious indoor and outdoor areas, we’ve created multi-zone environments to keep our youngest tamariki safe while still encouraging curiosity and play.

There’s a private couch for mama and bubs to feed and settle in comfort, and a calm, peaceful sleeping area where little bodies can rest and recharge.

Mānawatia a Matariki!

Kia ora e te whānau, we are looking forward to celebrating Matariki with you.
Your tamariki will be making soup and they’re so excited to share it with you. If you haven't already brought in a vegetable for the pot, please drop one in by the end of the week.

Lets have a beautiful evening together, full of reflecting, celebrating and being present with our children!

Due to roll growth and one of our lovely teachers seeking a change in career, Heart and Soul ELC is currently looking to fill two qualified teaching positions. Firstly a shorter hours position in our toddler room and then also a full-time position in our preschool room.

We are a very proud nature-based RIE-influenced centre set on 5 acres of park-like grounds in Kumeu, North-west Auckland, with lots of animals and extensive vegetable gardens. We encourage children to grow a deep appreciation and respect for our natural world, weaving sustainable practices into daily experiences with the hope that we are nurturing future kaitiaki.

We provide real-life, authentic experiences for children so that their natural patterns of playing and learning can take shape and the joy of wonder and curiosity can be fostered. We believe that through these real-life experiences, there are infinite opportunities for discovery, exploration, and ‘learning whilst doing.

We are a fun but very relaxed team that values unhurried peaceful interactions with respectful, genuine relationships at the core of everything we do.

Our team is dedicated to ongoing learning through both internal evaluation and a supportive professional growth cycle. The successful candidate will need to be open-minded to ongoing future learning and have an interest in both nature-based learning and RIE philosophy.

If this sounds like the environment for you please email [email protected]

We knew that if we looked after our garden, it would look after us. Well, it turns out our hard work is already paying off, We have been rewarded with early spring strawberries! Even the smallest tamariki's contribution is valued here at Heart and Soul... Here is the Koru room tamariki picking and enjoying the first harvest.

After a lot of weekend work setting up a beautiful habitat at Heart and Soul for a surprise visitor, it was over as quickly as it began.
Welcome and goodbye to Draco... our summer resident bearded dragon!
Would you believe that Draco was only with us for about a week before he decided that the time was right for his long winter sleep called brumation. Now he is curled up and sleeping under his rock at home with Mel and the family and probably won't wake up for four whole months!
Even though it was the shortest of visits, Draco inspired amazing learning and literacy with some of the children drawing pictures recording fun facts like "Draco can not fly and does NOT breath fire!"
We look forward to welcoming Draco back and learning more about reptiles and their care when he wakes up.
