Over the weekend some of our Dojo attended the Kancho Shokei Matsui’s Seminar in Auckland. There were around 200 in attendance from around the country and from afar, with Shihan’s from Romania, New Caledonia and Australia along with our very own Shihan’s.

The seminar was spread across 2 intensive days, where we went through Kihon, and Ido Gieko, breaking down and refining our techniques, with simple little tips that we look forward to bringing into the Dojo.

Kancho was very impressed with those in attendance, he threw in some curve balls with techniques and movements that we do not otherwise routinely go through, which were picked up relatively quickly.

It was a great weekend with lots of brain power used to learn and take in everything that was being demonstrated. Well done to all of those that attended.

What is a Kyokushin grading you may ask ?

this is what Google told me :

A Kyokushin karate grading is a rigorous physical and technical test consisting of physical conditioning, technical ex*****on, designated forms, and full-contact sparring. Successful completion allows a student to advance through the colored belt (Kyu) or black belt (Dan) ranks.

the best way to find out is to ask someone that has done Kyokushin gradings (or do one )

on Sunday we had our first grading of the year
well done to everyone that graded !!!
KEEP UP THE HARD WORK

To the adult who keeps thinking about starting karate but hasn't yet 🥋
We see you.

You've watched the videos.
You've driven past the dojo.
You've told yourself "next month" for six months in a row.

And every time, the same voices show up:

"I'm too old."
"I'm not in shape."
"Everyone will be better than me."
"What if I look stupid?"
"What if I can't keep up?"

Here's what nobody tells you:
Every black belt in every dojo — including ours — started EXACTLY where you are right now. Nervous. Out of shape. Unsure. Wondering if they belonged.

The only difference between them and you?
They walked in anyway.

You don't need to be strong to start. You don't need to be flexible. You don't need to be young. You don't need to know a single thing.

You just need to show up ONCE.
That's it. That's the whole secret.

The dojo will handle the rest. 🥋

You do not need to be in shape to begin.

You do not need experience.
You do not need to “get ready” before walking through the doors.
You do not need to be tougher, faster, stronger, or more confident before your first class.

You just need to start.

That is one of the biggest misconceptions people have about martial arts. Many think they need to already look the part before they are allowed to train. But that is not how growth works. Confidence does not come first. Discipline does not come first. Skill does not come first.

First comes the decision.

At our Kyokushin karate school, beginners are welcome.

If you have been thinking about trying martial arts for yourself, your child, or your family, this is your sign to take the first step. You do not need a background in karate. You do not need to know the terminology. You do not need to worry about being behind. Every strong student was once a beginner stepping onto the mat for the first time.

What matters is not where you start.
What matters is that you start.

Kyokushin training is about more than punches, kicks, and conditioning. It builds focus, respect, resilience, and self-control. It teaches you to keep going when something is difficult, to stay calm under pressure, and to improve step by step.

For kids, that can mean confidence and discipline.
For teens, structure and accountability.
For adults, renewed energy, sharper focus, and the satisfaction of doing something hard and worthwhile.

Nobody walks in as the finished version of themselves.

That is what training is for.

So if you have been waiting for the right time, this is it. If you have been telling yourself you will start once you feel more ready, let that go. Readiness is built through action.

The hardest part is often just showing up once.

Beginners are welcome this week, and we would be honored to help you take that first step.

Come train.
Come grow.
Come see what Kyokushin is all about.

Osu.
