Clarifying the process for our community.
The Board would like to acknowledge the interest shown by our school community following the recent notice regarding the casual vacancy created by the resignation of an elected parent representative.
After careful consideration of the available options, the Board agreed to progress with the process to fill the vacancy by selection. This approach is supported by guidance provided to school boards by the New Zealand School Board Association and is a common way of filling casual vacancies outside of election years.
In making this decision, the Board considered both the practical and financial implications of the different options. Selection allows the vacancy to be filled in a timely and cost effective manner, while also providing an opportunity to consider the skills, experience and perspectives that will best support effective governance of the school. If the Board proceeds with an appointment, it will first agree on the criteria that will be used during the selection process.
We also want to ensure that the community is aware of its rights under the Education and Training Act. A by-election must be held if a written request is received from at least 10% of eligible voters. If this threshold is reached, the Board will arrange a by-election.
To ensure a clear, fair and consistent process, any requests for a by-election must be made in writing. This allows the Board to maintain an accurate record of submissions and aligns with the way school elections have been managed previously.
Written requests can be posted or delivered to the school office and must be received by 25 September.
The Board remains committed to strong, stable governance and to supporting the school leadership, staff and learners to achieve the best outcomes for our community.
