Nourishing Our Tamariki Through Kai

At Busy Bees Katikati , ensuring we provide tamariki with nutritious and balanced meals is an important part of what we do. 🐝💚

We take the time to learn about each child’s likes and dislikes, including all of their favourite foods, and use this understanding to help create menus that are nutritious, enjoyable and familiar, while also giving tamariki opportunities to try new and different foods.

Mealtimes are also an opportunity for learning. We talk with tamariki about different foods, where they come from, why our bodies need them and how nutritious kai helps us grow, learn and stay healthy.

Our goal is to create positive experiences around kai, where tamariki feel comfortable exploring new foods while still enjoying the favourites they know and love. 🥝🍎🥕

Our tamariki have been arriving this week full of excitement, proudly telling us how their Matariki surprise seedlings they took home are growing🌱✨

It has been wonderful to hear their stories and see the pride they have in nurturing something they planted themselves. This simple activity has helped extend our Matariki learning beyond the centre, encouraging responsibility, patience, and a connection with nature.

Our Matariki learning journey continued today as our tamariki made delicious fry bread to take home and share with their whānau. 💛

Through this special activity, our tamariki explored different ways fry bread can be made while learning about the importance of sharing kai, showing gratitude, and spending time with the people we love.

As the smell of freshly cooked fry bread filled the centre, excited tamariki gathered around to see the results of their hard mahi. There were lots of proud smiles as they admired their work before enjoying some for afternoon tea and carefully taking some home to share.

Matariki is a time to reflect, give thanks, and strengthen our connections with one another. We hope sharing this homemade fry bread creates a special moment for our tamariki and their whānau to come together around the table.

As our Matariki celebrations continue, today we celebrate Matariki , the star that brings people together to reflect, give thanks, and celebrate new beginnings.

Our tamariki are exploring what gratitude means by taking time to appreciate the people, places, and experiences that make our lives special.

Last week, Tamawhariua Health & Social Services held a Whānau Hauora Day. As a centre, we were proud to make a small contribution in support of the event and to show our gratitude for the incredible work the Tamawhariua team does for our community.

Tomorrow, our tamariki will continue exploring gratitude by making a special homemade treat
to take home and share with their whānau.

We were so grateful to welcome Anahera back to Busy Bees Katikati today to share her knowledge of Matariki with our tamariki through kōrero, waiata, and a beautiful story.

Anahera, a Kaiako at Katikati College with many years of early childhood experience as well, created a meaningful learning experience that our tamariki thoroughly enjoyed.

As Matariki is upon us, our centre has begun a beautiful journey of learning, celebrating, reflecting, and embracing all that this special time represents.

Over the coming week, our tamariki will explore the stories, values, and traditions of Matariki through meaningful experiences together. Next week, we’ll continue the celebrations with our Matariki Holiday Programme - Bringing Busy Bees to Home connections, filled with fun, creativity, and connection.
