HATA and Sow the Seed nominated Hilary Johnson for the Kudos Science Trust Science Spinners Science Teacher / Educator / Communicator Award, for helping to improve education in horticulture, where she was made a finalist. The awards were held on Friday at the Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton and she won, against some very tough competition! Hilary runs a unique horticultural programme in the Katikati College Grow Hub, for students, which also supports and brings the wider community together. She has put an immense amount of selfless hardwork into this project and we are very proud of her achievement.

Students are really enjoying the fantastic new GrowHub facility

Another great milestone has been reached by the Katikati Innovative Horticulture Project.
The much awaited new purpose-built Katikati Innovative Horticulture building was officially opened on the afternoon of Wednesday 17 May.
Present at the opening were invited guests representing the many people from private individuals to family trusts, growers, packhouses, philanthropic organisations and major industry players who had contributed towards this new facility, either financially or in kind. Members of the Katikati College Board of Trustees and past and present members of the Katikati Innovative Horticulture Trust were also present.
The ceremonial opening was carried out by local businessmen and long time players in the kiwifruit industry, John Bourke of Wainui Orchards and Sean Carnachan of Western Orchards. The Trust invited John and Sean to perform this role in recognition of the huge contribution these two gentlemen have made in leadership and fundraising since the inception of the project.
The building has been named GrowHub to reflect the Project’s objectives of growing young people, growing partnerships and connections and its role as a meeting place of learning communities.

Woohoo! The new building is coming along nicely.

The new building has a footprint of 300 square metres so old garden beds have been demolished and a new raised garden area has had to be created. Thanks to our Technology Faculty, Tech and Hort students for their hard work and Claymark Sawmill for generously donating the timber. This is such a collaborative and community spirited project!

A whakawatea karakia ki te whenua (blessing of the land) was held on September 12 at the site where the new building is being constructed at Katikati College. This was followed by a ceremonial turning of the earth.
The Trust is working alongside project managers Tectum Consulting and local company, Steel Shed Systems, which is constructing the building.
The new Katikati Innovative Horticulture Centre is expected to be operational for the beginning of 2023.
