Thanks again to all the wonderful whānau who helped us celebrate Matariki on Friday. It was a little late, but it was lovely to get together and share some kai and some good company. Matariki is a special time for Aotearoa New Zealand, and it is becoming an increasingly important part of our community celebrations here at Sunshine kindergarten. On Monday, we took down the Matariki wall for another year, and almost immediately a group of children created another Matariki wall of their own. It's good to know we have so much interest and enthusiasm. We are already looking forward to next year.

This week we're continuing our learning about the Matariki stars. We're making wishes to Hiwa-i-te-rangi, and mixing up shortbread dough for Matariki stars. Mānawatia a Matariki.

Ngā mihi thank you to Martin the toymaker.co.nz who came to Kindergarten today to support our woodworking learning. He taught the tamariki how to make wooden kites to celebrate Matariki. Kites are connected to Ururangi, the star linking to the winds and reminding us that Matariki is a time for fun.
