The stingray video

Our tamariki in Vanessa's care had two incredible encounters recently while out exploring- first watching an octopus swiming close to the shore, even changing colours then a few days later a stingray gliding through the shallows.
These moments sparked rich kōrero about habitats, camouflage, and how the sea creatures find their food. The children were amazed, curious and completely absorbed in the wonder of the nature world around them. This is the beauty of home-based care. With small groups and flexible routines, tamariki can follow their natural curiosity out into the community, discovering real life learning in the real environment. Hands-on experiences like these happen naturally when we move at the children's pace and explore together.
At Ahikā, these everyday adventures ignite wonder, deepen understanding, and show the powerful learning that happens beyond four walls.
