Over the past week we have been introducing children with some large Practical Life activities. The children were busy doing table scrubbing, plate washing, window washing, nail scrubbing and paint mixing.

Why does Montessori value so much on real life chores?
These materials are a group called Care of Environment. Which help our children become more self-reljant and take pride in their belongings. The long and multi-step process also helps children to stay focused and extend their concentration while they were participating.

"The exercise of Practical Life are formative activities, a work of adaptation to the environment" - by Maria Montessori

You may have all seen our Practical Life shelves! This term we are taking an approach to bring back the basics to our tamariki. Such as pouring, opening and closing container, preparing fruits, combing hair , setting up a table and flouring aranging.

While looking very simple for adults, these activities are very important for the children as they provide real experience to them, that draws their attention in and keep them focus for longer period of time.

Children are in an important period of time to develop their coordination and concentration, Dr Montessori's response was to give the children practical life, give them tasks that they saw adults performed in their home, and make them interesting and inviting so that they would like to repeat them, and refine their movements through these.

More exciting changes to come....

A visit to Kaikoura Dark Sky Expo

It was a really fun trip with our Orcas tamariki. Although it was a long walk we managed really well. We listed to an introduction, and enjoyed looking at posters and listening to how to help nocturnal animals. Our tamariki also enjoy playing with puzzles and colourings, as well as other fun games. Thank you Kaikoura Dark Sky Trust and Kaikoura Museum for hosting this amazing event!

Have you encountered our children on an excursion these days, or have you received the lovely letter from your tamaiti and read it with them? Recently we are making connections to our communities a lot exploring the topic of transportation and postage&mail. The children really love making connections to the wider community and our teachers enjoy going out with them too.

Our Penguin children are engaging with an animal topic recently.

We realised the children enjoys the animals and thanks to our family sending us lots of animal photos, we now have a wall full of different animal pictures. Having the pictures at children's level really draws the childrens attention during the day. Our penguin children like to come up and check out those animals, and trying to say the animal name or make the animal sound. It's a great opportunity for their language development.

During the day we also have toy animals, books and lots of songs and stories relating to animals. Our children enjoys them a lot.

What's happening in Orcas Classroom?

Last week we have introduced a series of activities called Polishing.

Currently we have plant cleaning - which is for children to gently clean off the dust on the leaves. And wood polish - using vegetable oil to make the wood smooth. We are also planning to introduce silver and metal polish in the future.

Polishing activities give children a chance to synthesise preliminary skills, such as holding a cotton swab and using a dropper, into an orderly sequence that yields such a satisfying result.

Our children have been busy working on the art works and entries for the Kaikōura A&P Show in the past few days. All children together created Koru and other patterns for our display board. And our Orca children also did some amazing rock painting and joined the colouring competition. They all enjoy using different materials and media to create artwork.

Check out the amazing pancakes we made yesterday!

Our Orca children beated the eggs and sugar, mixed in with flour and baking powder. Our lovely teacher fry them with the class.
We then share them together with the penguins. Everyone enjoys the pancakes.

Hope you enjoy the Waitangi Weekend, we will see you back on Tuesday.

To commemorate the Waitangi Day, our children in the Orca classroom have been very busy. We have been looking at, colouring in and making the New Zealand Flag and National Māori (Tino Rangatiratanga) flag. We also had a chance to hear both versions of the National Anthem.

We can't wait for tomorrow (Thursday), when we are going to make pikelets with our tamariki and share with everybody.

We wish you and your whānau to have an enjoyable time.
