Loose parts are an integral part of supporting the 100 languages of the Reggio Emilia philosophy that guides our practice. Loose parts promote language, conversations, imagination, the arts, story telling, literacy and numeracy and science and exploration.

As you can see by these photos, loose parts can be used in so many different ways and this supports tamariki to explore and refine working theories, work collaboratively and promotes the development of fine and gross motor skills.

Anything can be anything from a truck to a bus, a zoo and even a see-saw to name but a few.

Communication supports social competency and ruma Manawa has a focus on supporting tamariki to learn how take turns and ask for what they need. As part of this focus, one container of each paint colour was supplied and tamariki asked to swap their colour with another of their peers. Kaiako supported this with proximity and scaffolding language to empower the tamariki to use their verbal language skills to support their needs. This encouragement has seen a lot more turn taking, sharing and collaborative learning take place.

In ruma Atawhai, there has been a lot of interest in monster trucks after several tamariki visited a show in Dunedin a few weeks ago.

Our food truck became a monster truck and after the storage garage for our trucks was assembled, conversations around the role of the trucks commenced. By the end of the morning there was a need for road works. A question 'how do the roads get fixed? ' has started us on another learning journey to investigate this curiosity.

We have had lots of excitement over food at Sovereign Star Nursery and Preschool.
Over the last few weeks we have been learning about what it is to be kaitiaki and caring for our environment. Tamariki have been keen to nurture the garden and watch our vegetables grow. This has led to an interest in food and discussions about where our food comes from and what is healthy and what is a treat. This week tamariki helped prepare then tasted a range of vegetables, fruit and yesterday they made sushi.

At Sovereign Star Nursery and Preschool we encourage our tamariki to imagine and explore possibilities with the resources we provide.
At the moment, in the Manawa and Atawhai areas, role play is a very big interest. We have seen the kapa haka group, coffee mornings for 'mums and dads' a coffee shop, contract builders, a playground with a see saw made from loose parts as well as an innovative dolls pram using and old hoover.

Out tamariki are innovative thinkers and their imaginative ideas are inspirational. Our vision “Ko te ahurei o te tamaiti arahia o tatou mahi" Let the uniqueness of the child guide our work" is our commitment to encouraging self belief and confidence in who we are. After preparing the kai for our Matariki Celebration Soup, a baking session was offered with much enthusiasm from our tamariki in Ruma Manawa. Baking is a great way to incorporate the concepts of science and maths into our curriculum. Tamariki are encouraged to count as they add ingredients and and describe the changes as various ingredients combine, developing descriptive language also.

At Sovereign Star Nursery and Preschool, we support our tamariki to investigate, discover and experiment with the environment resources to support learning at their pace and in their time.

The Atawhai tamariki have had various vessels to explore possibilities with water play. They have experimented possibilities with various loose parts around the centre and we have seen many great theories verbalised from their discoveries. Open-ended play allows for creativity without barriers and tamariki are able to develop working theories to better understand the world they live in.
