Johnsonville West Kindergarten High Quality Early Childhood Education A strong focus of our programme is the acknowledgement and celebration of the diverse cultures in our community.

We have a strong commitment to respectful practice in our relationships with the children, parents and whānau. Our Kindergarten has a healthy food policy and we encourage families to pack a healthy lunchbox each day including a morning tea snack, lunch and a water bottle. Water is also available throughout the session. As part of our programme we regularly bake and cook with the children. Families

are welcome to come and cook with the children also. If your child has allergies or intolerances please let us know.

Kia ora whānau,

We are noticing that many of our new tamariki are beginning to build friendships and develop a strong sense of belonging within the learning environment. Our tamariki have also been learning about ANZAC Day, where they made ANZAC biscuits and enjoyed a shared taste together. Through these experiences, they are engaging happily in activities that reflect their interests, while developing confidence, social skills, and independence as they explore and connect with others.

Sri Lankan New Year Celebration

This week, our tamariki celebrated the Sri Lankan New Year, learning about its traditions through storytelling and shared cultural experiences. Traditional games encouraged teamwork, coordination, and social interaction with the Sri Lankan community. Most importantly, the celebration nurtured respect for cultural diversity and strengthened children’s sense of belonging within our learning community.

Kia ora whanau, Last week our tamariki enjoyed rich learning experiences through gardening, celebrating Easter, and exploring sustainability with a visit from Lorraine Boennic (Zero Waste Education, Wellington City Council). Through planting, watering, and caring for our garden, tamariki developed responsibility, teamwork, and a connection to the natural world, showing manaakitanga for living things. The recycling session strengthened their understanding of reduce, reuse, recycle, and kaitiakitanga, empowering them to care for Papatūānuku. Our Easter celebrations, supported by whānau, included making paper mâché eggs, baking hot cross buns, and engaging in creative and mathematical activities, fostering fine motor skills, creativity, early maths concepts, and a strong sense of belonging and community.

Here are some highlights from last week in our kindergarten. Our tamariki showed wonderful creativity as they explored and expressed their ideas, while also supporting and helping one another in their play and learning. It was heartwarming to see them strengthening their connections, showing care and empathy, and building and maintaining meaningful friendships. Through these experiences, tamariki are growing their confidence, learning to work alongside others, developing a strong sense of belonging, and understanding the value of caring for and supporting their peers.

Last week our tamariki were full of curiosity as they explored music, extended their learning about pūrerehua (butterflies), played games with shapes, and let their creativity and leadership shine. These hands-on experiences not only sparked their enthusiasm for learning but also supported early numeracy and literacy, helping them develop skills in recognising shapes, building vocabulary, and expressing their ideas with confidence.

Kia ora whānau,

Last week our tamariki had a special visit from Easyswim, where they enjoyed a meaningful discussion about water safety and learning about swimming. The children showed great interest by sharing their ideas and knowledge with one another. Some of our tamariki who love bugs also spent time being creative by drawing different insects and talking about them together. Our kaiako supported these conversations by discussing the importance of caring for living things and reminding tamariki to be gentle and not hurt the bugs we find in our kindergarten. Tamariki also explored new technology by laminating their own shapes, which they were very excited about, and enjoyed creating their own masterpieces. It was lovely to see the children exploring their interests, expressing their creativity, and learning how to care for the world around them.

Kia ora whanau, Last week our tamariki were super busy with their own learning through spontaneous play and participation in thoughtfully set-up experiences. There was lots of leadership emerging as children confidently explored their interests and supported one another. Alongside this, they were strengthening their mathematical and literacy learning in natural, meaningful ways as they counted, problem-solved, communicated, and shared ideas during play.

Today marks Maz’s final day with us, and we shared a special mat time to acknowledge her and send her off with our heartfelt thanks as she begins her new role at Onslow Kindergarten.

We are deeply grateful for the time you have spent with us, Maz. Your kindness, professionalism, and genuine respect for our mana and the mana of our tamariki have strengthened our team and enriched our community.
