✨ Matariki – A Time to Reflect, Remember and Look Forward ✨

As we celebrate Matariki, we are reminded that this special time is one of reflection, connection, renewal and hope. It is an opportunity to pause and acknowledge the journey that has brought us here, while looking ahead with excitement for the year to come.

Over the past few months, our kindergarten whānau has experienced many changes. We have warmly welcomed new tamariki and their families into our community, said heartfelt farewells to children as they begin their exciting school journey. We have also been delighted to welcome new kaiako to our team, each bringing their own strengths, passion and care for our tamariki.

One of the highlights has been reconnecting with our friends at Newfield School, strengthening the relationships that support our children as they grow and transition into the next stage of their learning.

Like the stars of Matariki, every child, family and staff member adds something unique and special to our kindergarten. Together, we create a place where everyone belongs, where relationships flourish, and where learning is nurtured through kindness, curiosity and aroha.

As the Matariki stars shine brightly above us, we look forward with gratitude, hope and excitement for all that lies ahead. Thank you to our incredible whānau for being part of our journey. We can’t wait to continue growing, learning and celebrating together.

As the term comes to an end, we reflect on a rich and meaningful time here at Newfield Kindergarten.

The beautiful weather inspired camping experiences, where tamariki revisited holiday moments on the whenua. Through tents, a BBQ, and a visit to the local butcher, children strengthened whakawhanaungatanga, building connections through shared experiences and imaginative play.

We are incredibly proud of our A&P Show success, with first place for our cake, placings in our vegetables, and Elyse achieving in the photography section. These moments reflect manaakitanga, as tamariki supported and celebrated one another.

Our exploration of the Winter Olympics supported the development of social and emotional skills, including turn-taking, resilience, and understanding that all efforts matter. Luca showed true perseverance, reminding us of the importance of trying again. Learning about Paralympians Corey and Adam also deepened our understanding of inclusion, empathy, and determination.

What a wonderful term of learning and growth 🌱

Following on from our recent post, today we would love to introduce you to George — or “Gg George,” as his great-grandson Matteo lovingly calls him.

This morning, George spotted his mokopuna driving along Centre Street and, without hesitation, turned around and followed them straight to Newfield Kindergarten. A small moment, but one filled with meaning and aroha.

George is a treasured part of Newfield Kindy’s history. Many years ago, he was one of the committed members of our hapori who went door-knocking throughout the neighbourhood, gathering signatures to petition for a kindergarten in Newfield. When that moemoeā became a reality, George continued to give his time and energy, physically helping to build the kindergarten — laying the foundations of this special place for future generations.

To now see his great-grandson Matteo attending the very same kindergarten is a beautiful example of whanaungatanga — the strength of relationships, connection, and belonging across generations. It is a powerful reminder of how the mahi of those who came before us continues to shape the lives of our tamariki today.

Newfield Kindergarten is more than a place of learning. It is a place built by whānau, shaped by community, and held together by aroha — across generations 💙

A special story of whanaungatanga at Newfield Kindergarten ✨

We’d love to share a beautiful piece of Newfield Kindergarten history that was shared with us recently — a story that truly reflects whanaungatanga, the importance of relationships, connection, and belonging across generations.

Matteo, who started with us earlier this year and is now in his third week at kindy, has a very special connection to our past. His mum Bridget and his Tāua Helen shared a story that links our kindy’s beginnings with the present day.

Helen was not only one of the very first tamariki to attend Newfield Kindergarten when it first opened — she was the first tamaiti officially on the roll. She shared that it was her parents who went door-knocking in the area many years ago, gathering signatures to petition for a kindergarten in Newfield, as the closest kindy at the time was Nelson Street. Their determination and commitment to the community saw the petition succeed, and they were involved every step of the way during the building process.

Helen proudly returned for our 50th birthday celebrations, and it feels incredibly special to now welcome her mokopuna, Matteo, into our kindy while she was in town for work.

We feel very privileged to be trusted with your mokopuna and are grateful to your whānau for helping to create such a strong sense of community — ensuring Newfield Kindergarten has been a place of learning, connection, and care for generations 💙

🌿 Welcome back to Kindy for 2026! 🌿

It’s been so lovely welcoming our kindy friends and whānau back for the year. We hope everyone had a relaxing and refreshing summer break and enjoyed time together making special holiday memories.

To connect with our children’s holiday experiences, we’ve set up a camp site dramatic play area in the kindy. This has been inspired by the families who went away camping over the holidays and supports our ECE curriculum by encouraging storytelling, social skills, creativity, and sharing personal experiences. The children have already been busy role-playing, problem-solving, and making connections between home and kindy learning 🌞🏕️

We’re really looking forward to another year of learning, exploring, and growing together.

Heads up if your bin collection is Thursday

Bin collection CANCELLED tomorrow ⚠️

Due to the expected strong winds, WasteNet has made the tough call to cancel bin collections scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday 23 October.

Please do not put out your bins.

This decision follows advice from Emergency Management Southland, with extreme winds forecast over the next 24 hours. We need to put everyone's safety first.

Unfortunately, because of the long weekend, there will be no alternative collection. Bins will be emptied next Friday (a day later due to Labour Day).

All district-wide transfer stations and the regional recycling centre will remain open and operating as normal.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.
